SuperQueeros! for June 26th, 2013

It's a hummingbird! It's a Hot Wheels Plane! It's... No teaser this week! SuperQueeros: all that's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, transgendered, and queer in comics today!

Morning Glories #28
Evidently this issue is going to be a double-sized conclusion to the first arc of the new season. That's two double size issues all at once! I wonder if that means that the trade will only be issues 27 and 28... ANYWAY IS THAT HISAO/JUN ON THE COVER WTF I THOUGHT HE WAS DEAD! And, most importantly, is he gay like his twin?

Prophet #36
No mention of John Ka in the solicit, but it is getting pretty dramatic in the Prophet-verse!

FF #8
Everyone goes to rescue Bentley-23! Will Tong's gender identity help her save the day?

Chew #35
The hunt for the vampire continues! I don't think we had John or Mike last issue... fingers crossed! And also hidden far away from any chibopathic mouths!

Avengers Arena #11
Now that Mettle is totes dead and Finesse is outside of Chester's Mill, Hazmat and Reptil are evidently pairing up. Unless this is a bi triple involving Bloodstone, color me YAWN. Unless unless this is just build-up for killing off Reptil...

X-Men #2
John Sublime's sister is on the warpath, and Sublime himself is here to help the team take her down. But with his sister in control of Omega Sentinel, will the X-men survive long enough to decide if they can trust him? Oh, and will we see more of Bling!?????????

Teen Titans #21
Everyone knows Robin is bad! How does Bunker feel about one of his straight best friends being a totes baddie???

All New X-Men #13
The baby X-men take the fight to Mystique as they try to clear their names!

Justice League Dark #21
We find out how all the kids die! Including Xanadu? Isn't that exactly how her powers don't work?

Young Avengers #6
One of the best and queerest books around tackles Speed and Prodigy, the least interesting character and the most PERFECT (if he were queer) character, respectively. Wiccan and Hulkling might show up in this book, or it will be about the twenty-something experience at a desk job. So, basically, you can't go wrong with this one!

True Blood #14
More undead waitresses! Possible Lafayette?

SuperQueeros! for April 24th, 2013

The return of a classic queer comic and the beginning of the next chapter in one of today's hottest queer-inclusive series. Plus, more Young Avengers!! It's a great week to be... SuperQueeros: all that's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, transgendered, and queer in comics today!
A Distant Soil #39
I haven't ever read this series, but, according to it's Wikipedia page, it was one of the first comics to feature queer characters. Also according to Wikipedia, the debut of the series was with WaRP Graphics in 1983, its current run with Image started in 1996, and issue #38 came out in 2007, so it's been a long, sweet ride for this seminal comic. Looks like this is the week to see what the hype is all about!!!

Morning Glories #26
Season 2 starts here! Can Cassie save EVERYBODY?

Young Avengers #4
Hawkeye shows up and Marvel Boy's history gets "shamelessly ret-conned"!! (This series is AWESOME. Did you see that Miss America Chavez has two moms???)

Teen Titans #19
The solicit says that a Titan shows his/her true colors: looks like this terrible Red Robin story is shifting into high gear!

Justice League Dark #19
The Flash helps defend the House of Mystery!

Invincible #102
William probably won't be in this issue, but you never know!

True Blood #12
...and who KNOWS if Lafayette will be in this one!

SuperQueeros! for October 31st, 2012

Happy Halloween! And... that is the most exciting thing that happens in this post. It's the usual fifth Wednesday slump, which I guess means you have more cash for hurricane recovery! But if you do have some dollars on hand and an open comic book store nearby, there are two books that will probably not (but technically might) have a homo in them. But probably not.

EDIT: Justice League Dark Annual #1 and Karma in New Mutants #50!!!!!!

True Blood #6
Apropos for the season, it's the latest issue of the Alcide True Blood the comic! Speaking of Alcide, he has to help Sookie and the vampires save Bon Temps from a marauding werewolf pack! Given that these wolves are aiming to kill off most of the town in an event called the "Great Hunt" I'm guessing that they're led by Apocalypse. Or Harvest.

#dccaughtup

Ultimate Comics X-men #18
BAM! War on Nimrods. Storm, Kitty, Iceman, Rogue, and Bel Ami Wolverine. Stuffs going DOWN!

Plus, this is the last issue of the arc, so if we're going to get an eleventh hour Colossus, now's the issue!

SuperQueeros! for September 19th, 2012

At Dragon Con this year I went to an academic analysis of the racial make-up of and queer representation in the JL, Avengers, and X-men. The study only counted people as queer if they were explicitly so, i.e. if they were out. A lot of the books I'm covering this week don't necessarily feature explicitly queer characters, so I'll let you know who's what and why;

Batwoman #0
Kate Kane. The most awesome out lesbian ever. Sorry Ellen, sorry Karma, but Kate has a bat on the bottom of her shoe, so there's not really any competitsh. Anyway, this issue promises to reveal "how Kate shed her life of excess and disgrace." Didn't we already saw that in Detective Comics a few years ago? Eh, if there's one thing I've learned from Lost and Once Upon a Time, it's that you can always tell an audience the same backstory multiple times, as long as you tell it well. And with J.H. Williams III on EVERY aspect of this book (art, cover, AND writing), I'm pretty sure that's what we're about to get!

Avengers Academy #37
It's the last issue in the Final Exam storyline! And with Striker (out, gay brat) permanently scarred and Lightspeed (out, bi rainbow) ever in a state of moving on, will our heroes make it out of the Academy, or stick around for its new AvX status quo?

Hellblazer #295
John Constantine definitely dated a dude for a bit. He's married to a lady these days, though, so I'm not sure whether he identifies as queer, or if I should read that label onto him since he is, in fact, fictitious and not a real person.

X-Factor #244
Rictor and Shatterstar are totes boyfriends. Maybe they will even be in this issue!

New Mutants #49
My hero, lez-brarian Karma, was killed a couple of issues ago. Since this is the second-to-last issue of this run of New Mutants, I figure they'll bring her back this month so that all the straight characters can have some denouement next month.

True Blood #5
This book is on here because it is POSSIBLE that Lafayette will make an appearance. Also, they're looking into some villain's past this issue, and I'm assuming its a vampire and that AT SOME POINT Alan Ball made him/her sex a dude/lady (in a dream or otherwise). So Laffs probs not in this issue, but somequeer might be...

Wonder Woman #0
Is Wonder Woman queer? I think it's canon that she's had lady-friends, but I also don't think she identifies as queer (do they even have a name for queer-ness on Themyscira?). So take your pick of whether or not she's a friend of, or friendly with, Sappho.

Sword of Sorcery #0
No one has told me there will be queers in this book, but if there are no gays in "Gemworld" then there is no justice! #fingerscrossed

SuperQueeros! for July 25th, 2012

Two of my favorite queer characters showed up again last month!!!! Willow and Daken are rocking new books and, with only one back issue to pick-up, we should all go check them out!

Angel & Faith #12
Willow's teaming up with the Angel-verse (Faith, Angel, and Connor) to go to a hell (Quor-Toth) to try and bring back magic! Meanwhile, it looks like Giles' nieces are going to have to take care of some unwanted vampire thieves before they can get back to their TOWIE marathon.

Uncanny X-Force #28
Last issue the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants revealed itself: AoA Blob, Sabretooth, The Shadow King, Skinless Man (uhh... gross), the Omega Gang (Omega Red + buddies????), Genesis (but I wanted Good-pocalypse!), and... MYSTIQUE WITH DAKEN AS THE LEADER!!!!! OMG,  this book just got amazing-er!!!!!!!!!!! Except that they killed Gateway, which is the crap-est thing anyone has ever done. #racialprofiling

Astonishing X-Men #52
The honeymoon has to be put on hold! Last month Kyle and Jean-Paul were the first gay superheroes to tie the knot (on page -- unless we ever saw Apollo and Midnighter's nuptials? In which case I NEED THAT ISSUE!), but this month it's time to get back to the crisis at hand and find out who's making Karma crazy so we can help her kick its butt! And maybe her kick-as leg will kick some as too! (Also, has anyone noticed how often Karma just disappears only to get her brain taken over by evil psychics? You would think people would have started wondering if she were okay when she wandered off, rather than waiting until she crash landed back into their X-lives. Or maybe they should use her like a plot trouble detector to find evil psychics...)

Teen Titans #11
Wonder Girl's armor puts its plans into action and attacks the "teens"! (Come on, none of these people act or look like teens.)

True Blood #3
Vampires and stuff and Lafayette!

Justice League Dark #11
Yeah, I read last month's issue and I still don't understand the solicit. Evidently "secrets" are "revealed"? Yeah, riiiiight. Only if this is the last issue in the series! Duh!

SuperQueeros! for June 20th, 2012

Have you ever COMPLETELY forgotten about what day it was on the most IMPORTANT day of the year? YEah, me too. In my defense, the finales of Girls and The Legend of Korra and the release of Pokemon Conquest and the premiere of Warehouse 13 have had my head in a TIZZY,   but honestly there's no excuse for forgetting about...
ASTONISHING X-MEN #51!!!!!!
MAWWAGE. Yes, Northstar ties the know in what is the COMIC OF THE YEAR. What's that AvX? You think you stand a chance? Only if Scott dies, Jean comes back to life, Emma starts leading Utopia, and Xavin comes back from space and Northstar has to get REMARRIED because Xavin missed the first one. Oh, and Kyle has to get his own Kevin Keller-esque spin-off title. BUY THIS BOOK <3.

Batwoman #10
Penultimate chapter and lots of Killer Croc! This version of the Croc TERRIFIES me. Also, I hope Batwoman's new flirtation K.O.s her current relationship. Batman's most interesting relationship is with Catwoman, not Commissioner Gordon. QED, ditch the cop and pash the criminal, Kate!

Wonder Woman #10
Can Diana be saved from being Hell's wife????

Avengers Academy #32
The X-men come for Justin's Sentinel. Is this story logical? Yes. But is it going to be interesting?

Hellblazer #292
There's a werewolf on the cover!!! I might buy this...

X-Factor #238
Banshee gets framed!

True Blood #2
Think the Lafayette Rule applies to the comic too? (Lafayette Rule: A storyline RULES if and only if Lafayette features in it.)

Superqueeros! for May 23rd, 2012

It's one month until Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 come out in Japan and Pokemon Conquest comes out in the States! I am SALIVATING.

Meanwhile, the queers in comics this week are:

Astonishing X-Men #50
This title made news not only on the interwebs, but also The View! I have to had to the Marvel marketing team: if you want to start building a female audience (and a Marjorie Liu title is probably the best place to do that since she's (1) amazing and (2) writes a sexy Gambit) announcing a yaoi wedding on The View seems like a great way to go! So this must be the engagement issue... But if Kyle is going to off himself like we saw in the flash-forward last issue, how's he gonna show up to his wedding???

True Blood #1
The hit series (and multiple hit mini-series) gets its own on-going!

Justice League Dark #9
New writer, new team, and a new direction. I just wish Xanadu were along for the ride...

Teen Titans #9
The Culling ends! And leads directly into this month's Ravagers #1!

SuperQueeros! for December 7th, 2011

X-Factor #228
DID YOU READ ISSUE #227?????? That was CRAZY, Y'ALL! As in, I kind of don't understand what happened? But a lot of prophecies came true? But.... I don't know how? Also, why? And there's two more issues in this story arc so... The answers we'll be getting this week will probably only lead to more questions. Hopefully, though, we'll get some dot-connecting, because Regenesis is only two issues away and right now I don't think time is moving linearly for our heroes!

Stormwatch #4
So last issue's date didn't go very well and now Midnighter will have to rescue his soon-to-be-beloved from the stomach of a world-munching moon-beastie. By himself.

I give the monster 4 pages until it's dead.

The other news, though, is that there's a roster change to the team? I'm guessing they're referring to how the swordsman-guy who is the spirit of lies is going to betray the Authority and become their first Big Bad, but that's just a guess. They could mean they're going to kill Jenny and bring her back. Or knock out Adam One in a bid to make this an arc about nihilism. But I'm pretty sure no one's dying this early on, just switching sides.

True Blood: The French Quarter #4
Possibly the best cover of a comic book ever, ever. Eric, Sookie, and Bill deal with STDs while Lafayette and, evidently, Pam, get crunk on TruBlood cocktails. #awesome

Hack/Slash #10 & the 2011 Annual!
What to write about these two issues? From the solicits the annual seems like an interesting supernatural adventure and issue #10... seems like a cartoon-ish-ly absurd straight male fantasy. So pick it up, bi boys (and allies)!

Monday, October 31, 2011

SuperQueeros! for November 2nd, 2011

This week is the Hack/Slashiest! First, issue #9 from last week is actually shipping this week (Sorry Hack/Slashers!), and then there's issue 4 of a Hack/Slash crossover event with "Eva" (don't ask me). And for the friends of Dorothy there's a relevant reimagining and the third issue of the new Stormwatch comic! Good times!

(EDIT: Breaking news! Karma IS in New Mutants #33!!!! So pick it up!)
(EDIT 2: Also, there's a new True Blood comic that's already on issue #3?! And has a basically-NSFW- cover?! [it's not actually NSFW, unless you think Greg Land is NSFW] This week is SUPER queero!)

Hack/Slash/Eva #4
It's the last issue of the miniseries that pairs a nubile slasher-killing girl and her muscle-bound monster-man back-up with a time-displaced nubile monster-killing girl and her muscle-bound monster-man back-up! Find out if either of these final-girl leading ladies survives the greatest crossover since you looked in the mirror this morning, only at your local comic book store! (Note that for all my snide remarks this could actually be a good book: I haven't read it. But rest assured, this ain't no "Gert and Nico Raze the Patriarchy" so temper your expectations)

Stormwatch #3
What I gather from the solicit is that this issue has Apollo and Midnighter getting smashed and bashed while kicking the collective butt of the monster troops sent to invade Earth by a sentient Darwin-inspired, Apocalypse-esque Moon demon. But will they fall in love?????? #squee #buyit

Legend of Oz: The Wicked West #1

What's the land of Oz without the yellow brick road? Well, it's a lot more like the wilds of Kansas! And if there's anyone who knows the Kansas back country like the back of her hand, it's Dorothy Gale, cowgirl.

Monday, July 18, 2011

SuperQueeros! for July 20th, 2011

So many bi people this week! Okay, a lot of gays too, but we've got some bi representation from both sides of the gender aisle (those problematic areas within the larger, more inclusive gender church! [this metaphor broke so many syllables ago...])! Anyway, to the comics!

X-Factor #222
It's salt house time!!! Last issue 'star and Rahne were running for their lives from an assortment of slash-y, bite-y animal gods while Layla was salting every entrance to XFI. This issue starts with everyone (except M and Strong Guy) rushing into XFI and shutting the doors. Unfortunately, we also learned last issue (or the one before...) that Pip the Troll is actually a Troll-spy, getting ready to put a plan of his own in motion! So, the score is outside: gnashing teeth and crackling god-power. Inside: traitorous trolls and a pregnancy coming to term. Given how crazy the last X-Factor birth was, get ready for fireworks!

Justice League of America #59
Donna's dead?!?!?! Hopefully not for long! The Eclipso story is wrapping up next month, so expect some eleventh hour acrobatics from Starman and Obsidian and a dreamy, power-awakening pseudo-death for Donna, as well as a trick or two from the man in the two-tone mask to raise the stakes for next month. This has been a really interesting cast of characters, so I hope they go out with a bang!

Hack/Slash #6
Cassie's having dreams. About Beebs, about Gaga, and about the cast of Jersey Shore. Sometimes don't you wish they were just dead? Cassie does. And she's been killing them in her dreams. Funny thing: when she wakes up, they are! But what kind of Final Girl would Cassie Hack be if she just let these wish-fulfilling forces of evil go unchecked? It's saddling up time as Hack/Slash take on the Fame Monster!

True Blood: Tainted Love #6
This story is ending! This issue is about Bill, says the solicit. And Sookie and Jessica too, but mostly Bill. Yawn... I haven't been picking up this TB series, so don't know if we can expect some Lafayette, but it's the last issue, so if you have been reading along, this is the big finale!

Herc #5
Herc loses his shirt for a scene! Justice! Also, he's teaming up with his mystical foes to go take down a bunch of run-away gods who are riding high on the tide that is Fear Itself. So, cool times. Herc smash!

DC Retroactive: Wonder Woman - The 70's
This seems like it could be the coolest thing! If you don't know, before the big re-launch DC is doing a limited series of three issues each for its long-running heavy-hitters, one for the '70s, one for the '80s, and one for the '90s! The issue will be written by an iconic writer from that era and work to capture the spirit of the decade. This week it's the '70s, which means Wondy is in white and... really I don't know anything about this era, which is why I'm gonna #buyit and find out!

Monday, May 23, 2011

SuperQueeros! for May 25th, 2011

This week's comics are more balanced in terms of the gender of the queers they include, mostly because I looked up a comic book that's been on-going for almost six years and, low and behold, the protagonist is bi! Actually, most of the superqueeros this week are bi...Take a look:

Tarot Witch of the Black Rose #68 (EDIT: Totes an Adult Title 4 Str8 Boiz, Sorry!!!)
Hello comic-book-I-never-knew-existed, how are you? Evidently you are a Wiccan comic book (EDIT: whose proponents doth protest that it's Wiccan) about a coven's witch-warrior-hottie who defends her people from nefarious busty threats. And has a regular lady-hook-up in the form of a were-feline named Boo Cat!? Also there's frequent (EDIT: constant) nudity and gravity-defying breasts??? So we're not really out of queer-sploitation territory (EDIT: We are at its HQ), but at least it sounds like fun! EDIT: PR0N! It sounds like pr0n! This is it folks! While you were collecting all the issues of Naked Justice and Guardians of the Cube and wondering what straight people did without a Patrick Fillion of their own, Jim Balent was hard at work (pun intended) on being the straight, witch-y version of looking-at-superheroes-with-over-sized-sex-organs! Except someone felt like they had to market this book as female-empowering, not-pr0n? Straight people are weird...

Evidently it is horrible/hilarious: Here's an NSFW link that gives a great example of what this book is and, if you like that blog post, then I strongly encourage you to check out the rest of the links T-Dogg has provided in the comments! Seriously, the only things empowered by this comic are the male gaze and haunted vaginas, two things that I believe firmly in focusing on straight boys!

Wolverine #9
Mystique and her weird chest/heart bomb from Dark Reign are back! Or else she just got shot in the torso. It's hard to tell, because the preview has no lettering... I'm also not sure how either of those things would even slow down the Marvel U's Master of the Morph. Whatever the case, Wolvie is after her, 'cause he's pretty sure that she knows who sent him to Hell (wasn't it Daken?) and he wants to know whose balls he needs to bust. I'm definitely picking this issue up because, while Wolverine is as boring as toast, Mystique is the best thing since sliced bread!

Daken: Dark Wolverine #9.1
Speaking of Wolverine's bi, anti-heroic, sociopathic son, he's getting his very own "Point 1" issue! I'm nervous that when Rob Williams takes over scribe duties on Daken the Dark Wolverine's queerness will get swept under the rug. Let's hope this issue makes a point of showing all the things that Daken will do to get what he wants, including a man in uniform! ;)

True Blood: Tainted Love #4
No Lafayette in the solicit again, but he's one of the main cast so... I imagine he'll be in this book. (Obviously I haven't been keeping up with the True Blood comic book... Oops!)

Gotham City Sirens #23
Harley's still in Arkham, so Selina and Pam are going in to break her out! Let's just hope they can get her out of the toxic embrace of her ambivalent amour, the Joker!

Monday, April 18, 2011

SuperQueeros! for April 20th, 2011

Another 11th hour post about the new comics coming out today that feature queer characters, but this time I've delved a little further and pulled up some manga as well! One (if not both...) is super yaoi-y, so, you know, respect your age and what not:

X-Factor #218
Man down! Guido has been struck down by Ballistique's bullets! Which, we have found out, are not weird destruction vectors that come from her fingers and are therefore able to break bullet proof glass and puncture people whose mutant ability is to absorb kinetic energy, but are in fact real life, solid, able-to-be-turned-around-by-telekinesis, (but also they are magic?) bullets. Well. I'm sure we'll get an explanation. Right Peter David? Gosh I hope so... Also Ricstar!

True Blood: Tainted Love #3
Hot Eric and Pam cover!!! Hey, did you all see Anna Paquin in Scream 4? Best scene ever, right??? LOVED. IT. Back to comic books: Jessica is still in trouble, which means Sookie is just very, very bad at saving people from poisoning. Quelle surprise. So she runs to Eric. The quelle suprise-est. Lafayette wasn't mentioned in the solicits, but if you're a True Blood fan you can pick this up today (instead of waiting for Game of Thrones to finish). Thank gosh only the TV show is scheduled behind that constantly-delayed fantasy behemoth, am I right?

Mangas:
Treasure Vol 2
The first of my manga findings! This is either a cute shounen-ai or gross yaoi about a slow country boy and a hot city boy! With ex drama! That's all I know... There's not even a wiki page on it! And the cover art may not be the final version!! Oh, I just skimmed a google search of the author, Yamakami Riyu, and... I'm doubting that this is an innocent plain shounen-ai... especially considering the pr0n-esque premise... Still, the solicit doesn't say it's for mature readers only, so even if you have the intellect of a 17-year-old you can go ahead with this title! As for the issue of yaoi vs not-yaoi, there's only one way to find out: go to the store and see if it's plastic-wrapped! #dirty

Yellow II Vol 2
This one is definitely adult! But it also includes the "genre-bending" (the solicit's words, not mine!) qualities of action and adventure! In other words: "This ain't no Chi Chi feature, expect (some) plot!" And, also, expect the strict, conformist gender roles of uke-seme heteronormativity!!! #awesome?

Items of Interest:
Angel Aftermath #44
Oh, yeah, and Angel is ending its run on IDW. There's gonna be a coda issue next month too, but basically this is the end of the road folks! Next stop... twilight!

Wednesday, March 30, 2011

SuperQueeros! for March 30th, 2011

It's Wednesday already?! When did this happen??? Sorry for the late update, but this week is just disappearing on me! So let's talk queers in comic books before our time evaporates completely:

Dollhouse Epitaphs
Did you know that Felica Day's character in Epitaphs One and Two was queer?! I didn't, but in this sure-to-be-awesome one-shot we find out that Mag's coming out did not get quite the reaction she was hoping for... But don't worry, any-character-portrayed-by-Felicia-Day, we still love you!!! Also, we get everyone else's origin story too! #mustbuy

True Blood: Tainted Love #2
Lafayette is on the cover! I haven't been picking up this series, but I might have to grab this issue just for the cover... The solicit says Jessica is poisoned and Sookie wants to save her. So the central conflict is that a redhead is in trouble... looks like we're developing a theme this week...

X-23 #8
WOLVIE FIGHT!!! It's X-23 vs Daken in the Wolverine-spin-off crossover-showdown event of the season! Wolverine's clone, with Gambit in tow, ventures onto the island nation that Daken now controls and her kin ain't havin' none of that sort of family familiarity! I don't know if these two have interacted in the comics yet, but it'll be interesting to see how X reacts to Daken's manipulative personality. Will she see through him or fall for his act? Only two things are guaranteed: Daken flirting with the ragin' Cajun and CLAWS!

Other comics of interest this week:
Caligula #1 looks to be more bloody than queer, but it's set in Ancient Rome so there are NO RULES; Wonder Woman #609 has Dr. Psycho "saving" Diana; Gotham City Sirens #21 sees Ivy and Selina busting Harley out of Arkham - but will they be able to bust her out of the clutches of the Joker?; JLA: The 99 #6 marks the end of this historic cultural crossover event; Butcher Baker: The Righteous Maker #1 is the first issue of the over-hyped, and certainly explicitly-sexed, new Image series; the first issue of Age of X: Universe is out today, and who knows who's queer in this alternate reality; and finally, Jack of Fables #50 bows out the popular Fables spin-off series (and this blog post).

SuperQueeros! for February 23rd, 2011

Well after last week's drought it's nice to have some comic books to write about! This week we've got two X-titles and two possibly LGBT-related titles:

X-Men: To Serve and Protect #4
My favorite Anole storyline to date is coming to a close with the final issue of To Serve and Protect, the X-men's push to toe the line of the Heroic Age. The solicit has some grandiose teasers: "Friends become lovers! Lovers become enemies!" I don't know which relationships they're talking about and, worse, I don't have any hopeful hypotheses, but the conclusion to Anole's "X-Dudes!" is enough to make me buy any comic! #pickoftheweek

Uncanny X-Men #533
"Quarantine" enters it's fourth issue this week, which means Northstar's tenure on the premiere X-team is waning. Of course, with the threats of the Collective Man and Sublime's X-men both handily dispatched last month, the only thing on Northstar's "To Do" list may be his boyfriend Kyle. Now that's a comic worth $4!

Monday, November 22, 2010

SuperQueeros! for November 24th, 2010

It's Northstar Week! Not only is Northstar one-half of the un-quarantined X-men in Uncanny's creatively named "Quarantine" storyline, but Sasquatch's deal with the Great Beasts leads to Jean-Paul's inclusion in an awesome revival of the original Alpha Flight line-up for the Chaos War! Also, as if that weren't enough, Lafayette tells his story in the True Blood mini, the Wildcats' penultimate issue hits stores, and one of the New Mutants falls to the Inferno Babies! Plus GCS and Madame Xanadu! This is the best Thanksgiving EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chaos War: Alpha Flight
The most awesome Northstar-featuring comic this week (imo) sees the revival of his deceased teammates as they get one issue to help bring down the Chaos King. The premise for this event's tie-in books is: every living person is asleep and defenseless, so deceased heroes have been revived to fight an onslaught of attacking gods. I'm not sure if these characters stay relevant to the storyline after this one-shot, but whether or not they do I'm excited: I've not read any of the original Alpha Flight run and now, just like Marina, Vindicator, Guardian, and Shaman, I get a second chance!

Uncanny X-Men #530
If Chaos War: Alpha Flight is the most awesome Northstar-inclusive title this week, then Uncanny X-men is the most fabulous. The "Quarantine" storyline is, essentially, that Anole and the kids get sick (ANOLE ALERT!) and Utopia is quarantined from the outside world. Meanwhile, stuff starts going down outside the island, and the sick mutants start losing their powers. Where does Northstar come in to the equation? Well there are only two mutants NOT on Utopia when the quarantine starts: Dazzler and Northstar. Yup, we're about to get a full story arc of a super-diva and her super-GBF kicking butt all over San Fransisco. Who said all the X-Gays were metaphors only? #awesome #buyit

EDIT: Okay, Northstar and Dazzler aren't the ONLY un-quarantined X-Men. But 20% gay is still very gay!

True Blood #5
Lafayette's story! It's finally here! The second-to-last issue of the True Blood mini is out this week and we finally get to hear some of what Lafayette's been hiding. If you've been missing the fabulous fry cook while TB is off the air, this is the book for you. Plus, if you like Ryan Kwanten's Jason in compromising positions this book features just that sort of tale too!

Wildcats #29
Everything ends in #30! With one issue to go before everything hits the fan expect this issue to be a game-changer. Who will be the new Doctor? Will Apollo smash more golems like a blond Hulk? And is the ship headed toward Earth the Carrier or something worse????

New Mutants #19
This is the end of "Fall of the New Mutants" but it's definitely not the end of the Project Purgatory storyline! One of Marvel's Mutants is "fallen" and "no longer a part of the New Mutants" by the end of this issue, but I have a feeling that will play heavily into our heroes' successful counterstrike next month(s). Whatever happens, however, this issue is looking to be a turning point for our heroes as they're pushed to the max to overcome the overwhelming force that is: The Purgatory Babies! #KarmaKickingButt

SuperQueeros! for September 15th, 2010

I've been meaning to link to my Flickr photostream of Dragon Con 2010, so there you go! And after you're done looking at that, take a look below at the three comics coming out this week that feature queer characters!

New Mutants #17
Fall of the New Mutants (a.k.a. Inferno 2.0!) continues! Last issue saw the introduction of the "10 mutant kill team" so this issue, I assume, will chronicle their first clash with the New Mutants. And that means KARMA'S-LEG ACTION! None of the villains are robots, though, so Karma may be too occupied taking over their minds to whip out the new hardware, but it's been months since she got that sucker: Let's take it for a test drive! Also Dani and Sam's crazy random kiss from last issue (or the one before?) is explained (though the explanation still assumes a pre-existing atmosphere of sexual tension. Slash alcohol consumption)!! #buyit

The Rawhide Kid #4
Marvel's queer cowboy wraps up his latest limited series this week as his Sensational Seven square off against Christos Pike's gang of cut-throats. I took a look at the preview and the first four pages building up to the climactic final assault depict... a straight kiss? Didn't the Rawhide Kid gather this gang? Shouldn't one of his exes be included in the mix, for some classic, drama-riddled sexual tension? Isn't that how stories work??? Rawhide Kid = tokenism, imo, so I haven't been reading this comic, but he's DEFINITELY Family, so pick it up if Queer Cowboy for the Straight Guy rings your bell!!

True Blood #3
Eric tells his tale this month, but Sam and Tara set a trap for the Trickster, so hopefully Lafayette will get to make a cameo during the scenes in Merlotte's. If you're mourning the end of the third season, this comic book be your crutch until next June!

SuperQueeros! for August 18th, 2010

Sorry I missed last week! I was on vacation in Canada where all they sell is thousands of copies of Scott Pilgrim. By the way, did you see the movie? AMAZING, right? (It's AMAZING, guys)

Now to comics!
The Authority: The Lost Year #12
This is it! The final issue of the Autority's Lost Year! They've been hopping from dimension to dimension seeing themselves in many different lights. What will happen now that they're finally going to make it home? Will the Authority have learned from their various dopplegangers, or has this whole thing just been a prelude to their fall? Find out how this story wraps up THIS WEEK!

New Mutants #16
"Inferno Nouveau" continues as we finally meet the new (literal) team of "Hellions" secreted away during the infamous Inferno crossover and raised to do battle with the New Mutants! This is the plot that's going to lead into the Fall of the New Mutants storyline, so expect strife! (But not Stryfe. This is the Heroic Age! Cable has been replaced by X-Man. Who is way cuter.) Also, expect Karma's robotic leg!

JSA #42
It's the penultimate issue of the Starheart arc! The JSA and the JLA have teamed up to stop a possessed Green Lantern, Obsidian, and Doctor Fate (all JSA-ers...) from wreaking havoc on the world's ecosystems, but they've been captured and half-killed as they tried to invade the Starheart's moon base! How will our team get out of this one? And can Starman cure Obsidian with a kiss? (Can we please make that relationship a reality, instead of merely my fever-dream? PLEASE????)

True Blood #2
Story time continues! Watch as the cast of the awesome HBO show tell each other their dark, shameful, and sexy secrets! Includes Lafayette ("La La" to his mom), though it's Sookie's story this week.

SuperQueeros! for July 21st, 2010

Scott Pilgrim Volume 6, Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour, came out today!!!! Did you go to a midnight release party? I totally did! And then I stayed up and read Volume 6!!! I do not remember Scott Pilgrim being so much about pictures. And declarative sentences. But I guess you can't be asking questions all the time! Or talking! Also, BLOOD.

Anyway, I loved it and it was cute and there were 4 (FOUR!!) gays, two of whom TOTES MADE OUT, so SP6 gets ALL THE THUMBS UP!!

Oh, and some other comics come out this week?

New Mutants #15
Karma has a sexy new leg!!!

"I thought you said was going to be sexy!?" "This is sexy!!"
- exchange between Karma, the lesbian-sexual, and Box, the machine-sexual???, in Second Coming #2

Also, more demons are coming to kill everybody! Because Inferno was an atrocity whose sins are going to be revisited on an unsuspecting readership team of New Mutants!! Oh, and Moonstar and Cannonball are totally making out? And Sunspot and Magma are totes an item now? So Zeb Wells likes bad 80's crossovers and... 'shipping? I just hope that all the romance hasn't gotten in the way of his writing some bad-as guns into Karma's machine-leg!

X-Factor #207
Something, something HELA!! Rictor and Shatterstar, sleuthing, butt-kicking boyfriends, and some other people get hired by the Viking Goddess of Hel to do... something! And evidently it will have the internet all atwitter and the twitter all abuzz and the googlebuzz all a-internet because something MAJOR CRAZY FREAKY is about to go down on the last page! So go buy it! (actually do: Peter David is pretty much known as "The Delivery Man" because he always #delivers)

Justice Society of America #41
Obsidian is still crazy! Starman just got his heart crystal ripped out! Is he dead??? Will he be able to be resuscitated?? Will the Starheart drop it's hold on Obsidian long enough for him to sexily save the blue, bi alien hero? Will the totally make out, despite the chaotic havoc around them?? Hopefully the answer to all these questions will be YES, but the only way you'll know for sure is to pick up JSA #41!!

Dark Wolverine #88
Daken vs FrankenCastle! The match-up that killed Frank Castle will probs play into his resurrection (see Shadowland previews/comic book history 101), and here's where it all goes down! Also, given the title's history, maybe there will be some Punisher-on-Wolvie making out! (plz?)

True Blood #1

Something something... all the cool TV show characters tell their origin stories told... something... Alan Ball gets paid... something something LAFAYETTE!!!!!! That last word is the only one you need to know. This is gonna be awesome (hooker)!
