SuperQueeros! for September 15th, 2010

I've been meaning to link to my Flickr photostream of Dragon Con 2010, so there you go! And after you're done looking at that, take a look below at the three comics coming out this week that feature queer characters!

New Mutants #17
Fall of the New Mutants (a.k.a. Inferno 2.0!) continues! Last issue saw the introduction of the "10 mutant kill team" so this issue, I assume, will chronicle their first clash with the New Mutants. And that means KARMA'S-LEG ACTION! None of the villains are robots, though, so Karma may be too occupied taking over their minds to whip out the new hardware, but it's been months since she got that sucker: Let's take it for a test drive! Also Dani and Sam's crazy random kiss from last issue (or the one before?) is explained (though the explanation still assumes a pre-existing atmosphere of sexual tension. Slash alcohol consumption)!! #buyit

The Rawhide Kid #4
Marvel's queer cowboy wraps up his latest limited series this week as his Sensational Seven square off against Christos Pike's gang of cut-throats. I took a look at the preview and the first four pages building up to the climactic final assault depict... a straight kiss? Didn't the Rawhide Kid gather this gang? Shouldn't one of his exes be included in the mix, for some classic, drama-riddled sexual tension? Isn't that how stories work??? Rawhide Kid = tokenism, imo, so I haven't been reading this comic, but he's DEFINITELY Family, so pick it up if Queer Cowboy for the Straight Guy rings your bell!!

True Blood #3
Eric tells his tale this month, but Sam and Tara set a trap for the Trickster, so hopefully Lafayette will get to make a cameo during the scenes in Merlotte's. If you're mourning the end of the third season, this comic book be your crutch until next June!

SuperQueeros! for August 4th, 2010

Happy August! Four brand new Wednesdays await us, so let's see what the queer superheroes are up to in Week One!

The Authority #25
It's one part denouement and one part... nouement(?) this issue as Hawksmoor explains his super-secret ultimate-weapon-secret that he kept from the crew until last issue, just in time for the Carrier to reach its final destination. But where or to what has the Carrier been taking the Authority? And who, what, and how is it being guarded? (Because it wouldn't be a story without someone guarding it/he/she!) Also, Rainmaker is so the star of this cover!

Secret Six #24
Okay... I'm confused. The solicit for this month's Secret Six literally reads: "In a small, corrupt mining boom-town, six remarkable strangers who hate each other band together in a bloody last stand against an army set on destroying them all!" Have we warped back in time to the creation of the Secret Six? In the Old West? And why doesn't Deadshot dress like that more often? And will Knockout still be alive???

The Rawhide Kid #3
Another penultimate issue as Rawhide Kid tells his origin story right before he faces off against the Sensational Seven. This piques my interest a little bit: will Rawhide's story be as blatantly stereotypical as his current status quo? Or will we get a more nuanced, interesting origin? This issue could be a game changer for how I see Marvel's most fierce gun fighter. Stand by to judge!

House of Mystery #28
The witches are off and they're taking Fig with them! Given that the witches have hired the goblins to fight their war with them, and that Tursig narrates the story-within-the-story next issue, I think there's a pretty good chance that they're taking everyone's fav gay goblin along for the ride! I wonder what he's like on long road trips...

SuperQueeros! for July 8th, 2010

Happy (belated) Independence Day! Remember, the long holiday weekend means that comics ship on Thursday this week, so don't expect to find any brand new goodies at your comic book store today. But, oh man, tomorrow? Tomorrow expect EVERYTHING:

The Young Avengers: The Children's Crusade #1
That's right! Billy and Teddy and Heinberg and Cheung all back together again (no homo [WAIT, TOTALLY HOMO])! And they're about to go find the scarletest betch of all, the Scarlet Witch! This is the event of the year DECADE for any fanboy or girl of gays, magic, or Marvel, and it starts TOMORROW!!!!!! Plus, now with gay kisses! #SWOON

House of Mystery #27
Tursig gets more screen time as we get to the halfway point of the year that promises to see everyone's favourite gay goblin become a warrior king and a major player in the HoM universe. The solicits promise "changes" in this issue, and Tursig is even featured on the cover. If there's one issue of HoM you buy this year, it's looking like this is it!

The Authority #24

All that deep space mojo that the Authority pissed off last month? Yeah, it's attacking them now. Let's hope Rainmaker makes it through the day, slays the Aegean zombie, and gets the girl!

The Secret Six #23
Gail Simone is on break for the next storyline, but John Ostrander isn't pulling any punches. Scandal Savage is going to have to fight for her life as the tables get turned on the Secret Six when they become the prey of some wealthy, amoral predators. Hopefully Ostrander and RB Silva (pencils) will be able to capture Baine's and Catman's inner shirtless-ness. #complexstuff

The Rawhide Kid #2
Ugh. When Marvel told us that they were updating their ruff-and-tuff, coded-gay cowboy character to be explicitly out, they forgot to mention that they were going to completely rewrite his personality. Am I missing something? Is this new Rawhide Kid a harbinger of queer awesome-nocity, or simply trite lip service to a hypothetical gay populace that lives everyday like it's a Queer Eye premiere? I mean, I will park my butt in front of some Bravo, don't get me wrong. But "The Good, the Bad, and the Fabulous"? Really Marvel? Reeeeaaaaaally?

SuperQueeros! for June 9th

All the Queers in Comicdom, this week:

X-Men: Second Coming - Revelations: Hellbound #2 (of 3)
The gayest team of X-Men ever gathered continues on their quest to rescue the Limbo-lost Illyana Rasputin. But Gambit's mysterious dark side has been triggered by the demon dimension, and it does not look very friendly. Will Gambit save the team or smite them? Will Anole, or another X-man, lose another limb? And does Magik even NEED saving? The baddies haven't tied her up and, last I checked, she was a cruel and ruthless Darkchylde. This storyline is short, sweet, gay and PACKED with action. #GetIt

Secret Six #22
The end of the Catman revenge story! Watch half-naked boys and kick-ass lesbians knock the snot out of mercenaries, assassins, and other baddies that are badder (but not as bad-ass) as the band of bad guys we call the Secret Six. And thank Gail Simone for making all your dreams come true.

The Rawhide Kid #1 (of 4)
Is it just me, or is the Rawhide Kid kind of a Mary Sue? Except without the dying part? That opening scene in the preview? Whatever the case, he's one the oldest, most high-profile gay characters out there. Pick up his book if you like cowboys, comedy, or Queer Eye for the Straight Guy: Rawhide Kid is a consummate marksman, a flippant vigilante, and definitely not "masc looking for same." (Can you tell I was on Grindr this weekend? [You can tell.])

Honorable Mention:
House of Mystery #26
I love this book, but the queer content has been NON-EXISTENT recently. I'll upgrade it on Wednesday if this month has some gay trolling. Edit: THERE IS CUTE GAY CONTENT. Only for a panel, but still. Finally some gay troll page time!
