SuperQueeros! for September 7th, 2011

How was your Dragon*Con? With all the storms did you get back from Dragon*Con okay? Have you gone on your new friends' Facebook profiles and looked at all the pics of awesome costumes?? Gosh, I love Dragon*Con...

NEW COMICS THIS THURSDAY WEDNESDAY (EDIT: Evidently long weekends don't affect shipping anymore?):
Stormwatch #1 (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Midnighter and Apollo are back!!! With the Martian Manhunter and the rest of the dysfunctional Stormwatch family! I'm so excited for this book! After Batwoman this is my most anticipated title for the DCnU, and it's here this week! Yay for husbands!!!!!

X-Factor #224.1
So X-factor is getting a "point-one" issue. I'm very excited that they're getting the Marvel point-one treatment, but I have no idea what to expect! The solicit says that the team journeys to Madrox's hometown for... some... reason... and while there... stuff takes place and readers are (as in every point-one) introduced to the main cast and central themes of this book. Which are... Actually this "point-one" issue is going to be great! Because even hardcore fans who've read every issue could really use a refresher!

House of Mystery #41
More Fig/Lotus fighting/mind-effing. Will we see Tursig? Who knows!

SuperQueeros! for August 3rd, 2011

Welcome to August, the month of saying good-bye to our favorite DC titles! The DCnU relaunch is right around the corner, and our superqueeros are coming out in force this week to bid adieu!

Adventure Comics #529
It's the kids versus Evil-Cosmic-Boy (I think his name is Cosmic King)! From what I've seen of the new Universe Legion, Dragonwing and Chemical Kid are going to kick butt and be deputized into the Legion, but the jury is still out on whether Power Boy and/or Gravity Kid are going to get a similar promotion. As far as powers & personalities go theirs have always struck me as a little boring, but I'd love to have a cute gay couple to squee over every month. I'll definitely be getting this issue, if only to find out the fate of these two 'queeros. EDIT: Iread it, and it don't look good, kiddos.

Secret Six #36
It's the last Secret Six! And while Deadshot is going to be joining Harley and King Shark in Suicide Squad it looks like the other five members of this fan fav team are M.I.A. in the DCnU! Which means this is probably the last comic book to feature Scandal Savage for at least six months! NOOOOOO!!!!!

Veronica #208: Veronica Presents Kevin Keller #2
EDIT: I have no idea if this comic actually came out today. My guy didn't have it, and it's vanished from comixology so... Did you find it??? More Kevin Keller! As we noted in our video-cast, the last issue was a little heavy handed regarding Kevin's SUPER BIG WISH to be in the military because GAYS CAN DO THAT. And while that message is both topical and quintessentially conservative, like the Archie comics themselves, it'd be nice to see a more mellowed, less political story like we got in Kevin's first two appearances. From the solicits it looks like that's what we'll be getting, though I have heard that Kevin's military-themed relationship with his family is going to be a topic in future issues.

X-Factor #223
More Baby Mama Drama! Rahne continues her made dash to escape the powers converging on her uterus and we get one issue closer to Rictor having his powers again! Plus, there's a cute boy werewolf being all flirty with Rahne in this issue. I love cute boy werewolves! Team Jacob! Team Turn-Jackson-Into-A-Werewolf-and-Have-Him-Date-Derek-Hale! Team This Book!!

House of Mystery #40
The second to last issue of the Lotus Blossum story! This arc has been pretty good with the Tursig inclusion, but the solicits are hinting at a new new status quo in the coming months. hopefully this won't be to Tursig what the DCnU is to Scandal, but until then we've got two more issues for him to find a cute troll boy! #fingerscrossed EDIT: No dice on the Tursig front!

DC Retroactive: Wonder Woman - The 80's #1
I loved the WW in the 70's reprinted issue, so I'm really looking forward to picking up an issue that's over 20 years old! Also, hopefully the new story makes sense this time...

Herc #6
More Fear Itself stuff... Get a sidekick for ambiguous Greek tension, Herc!

Superqueeros! for July 6th, 2011

I'm still in Canada atm, and I'm flying home tonight! So here's a quick look at the gays in comics this week:

Action Comics #528
I'm not really sure if Gravity Kid is a senior, but the senior Legionnaires-in-training are graduating, and Power Boy is DEFINITELY one of those. Will he make the cut to be in the Legionnaires? Will Gravity Kid make the jump to the DCnU? This is one of the titles that isn't going to change very drastically, so developments now are probably going to stick! #buyit

Secret Six #35
It's a Bane-centric issue as SS finds some pre-DCnU denouement, which means he'll be looking at his relationship with Scandal, and probably her current relationship. I'm interested to see a Secret Six issue that's not trying to be over-the-top "awesome". #checkitout

House of Mystery #39
The solicit for this issue is promising to reveal a lot of secrets, so I'm tagging it "awesome" in terms of twisty-plot reveals and "low-moderate" in terms of likelihood of finding out what Tursig's been up to. I'm gettin' it though!

Superqueeros for May 4th, 2011

It's a motley assortment of queers in this week's comics shipment, but it's spearheaded by the epic conclusion to the most anticipated Secret Six story of all queer-story! (That's queer history, of course)

Secret Six #33
It's the end of "Darkest Hour", the awesome Secret Six story where the team fights its deceased members to see who gets to use the "Get Out of Hell Free" card! Someone's going to use it, but who will it be? I'm squeeing for Knockout to get the chance to return topside, but knowing Simone and her ever-expanding team of villains we'll probably get more than one resurrection. As long as one is Scandals' rowdy redhead, though, I'll be happier than a pig in mud!

House of Mystery #37
Okay, so the solicit says "a gang of mysterious strangers appears in the House of Mystery looking for one Lotus Blossom Mackenzie." Given the whole world-flipped-upside-down cliffhanger ending to the last issue I'm hoping that this "gang of strangers" involves some queer character, and my highest of hopes is that it includes Tursig. If it doesn't House of Mystery and I may begin seeing other people. Tursig hasn't been in so many of these issues recently! #VanishingGays

Fame: The Cast of Glee
Chris Colfer in comic book form! Also, other Glee actorzzzz... But Chris Colfer!!! The solicit doesn't say much, but if you're just starting your Mr. Colfer stalking this will probably condense all his interviews over the past 2 years into a handy two or three pages. And if, like me, you're already a huge Gleek then it'll combine three of your loves: comics, homos, and Gleeeeeeee!

Herc #2
If you don't remember, Herc's a canon Kinsey bisexual, so his continuing series makes the superqueero cut! Plus we get shots like this one. Anyone would go a little gay for that, am I right? And it's got Greg Pak co-writing, so it's got to be good!

Superqueeros! for April 6th, 2011

Secret Six #32
The story you've been waiting for continues! Ever since issue #6 we've been waiting for Scandal Savage to use her "Get Out of Hell Free" card to bust her sweetie out of the afterlife. But things have gotten a wee bit complicated: Ragdoll stole the card and proceeded to get himself killed, so now, in order to resuscitate Knockout, Scandal and the rest of the Six are going to have to fight a vengeful Ragdoll and an equally irritated demon army! I'm hoping that being in Hell means that the usual consequences to gratuitous violence are suspended and that this will liberate the pen of Gail Simone so that our favorite dastardly villains can be as cruel and inhuman as they brag they are. And that we'll end the story with a hot lesbian kiss over a mountain of corpses! #dreamitbeit

Avengers: The Children's Crusade #5
OMG, it's been 8 months since this story started! Remember when Magneto kidnapped our heroes from the Avengers mansion? Yeah, me neither. This book is like the anti-Brightest Day! It has characters who are not straight white men but it is NEVER published! Come on, Marvel. Jim? Allan? Can't you think of adding some tie-ins at least? That Iron Lad-centric one shot last month was AMAZING! Why can't we get a "Generation Lost"-type story to run parallel to this one? Seriously, just publish one shots of Billy and Teddy's dates every other month and my pay check is ALL YOURS. But until you get to publishing that certain-to-be-GLAAD award-winning series I'll just have to stick to re-reading Children's Crusade over and over again and then googling up some fanfiction... sigh... #BOOKOFTHEMONTH!!!

House of Mystery #36
A lot of cool stuff is happening with Fig and Cain, but they're lost in comic-book-space-time and in need of rescuing. I'm predicting that Tursig will be rallying Fig's friends this month to form a rescue party! 'Cause he's like this rockin' general and stuff now! And maybe he'll find a hulking gay ogre friend! #fingerscrossed Anyway, it's a good title on its own merits too, so even if it's gay-goblin-deficient this month it's still a good buy!

SuperQueeros! for March 2nd, 2011

WHAAAAT!!!!! KEVIN KELLER IS BAAAACK!!!! (Let's talk about LGBTetc. people in comics:)

Veronica #205
KEVIN KELLER APPEARANCE NUMBER TWOOOO! Evidently V and K are super besties who talk on the phone aaaaalllllllllllllll the time about the Bieb and the acne and the tween stuff but this is not the Best Thing Ever? Because sometimes you (Veronica) should stop talking on the phone and look around and remember important dates and take Betty's calls and stuff? But don't worry because the gang (whose calls you are not taking ["Why is my phone beeping in the middle of my sentence?" - Veronica]) and Kevin (who you must be talking over because the solicit says he is also trying to help you "remember one very important date" ["Gurrrrrl!" - Kevin]) will make sure you get to your college interview/pedicure/date with Archie/date with DESTINY with TIME. TO. SPARE. All of which we will be reading about in Veronica #205, the must-read comic of the week co-starring an Aryan gay KEVIN KELLER!!!!!!!! #buyit

Secret Six #31
GUYS IT IS FINALLY HAPPENING: Scandal is going to try and bring back Knockout!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Evidently it's a little more complicated than a simple "Please, Hell, thank you kindly"-type deal, and the solicit is TECHNICALLY vague about who's bringing what back, but I think we can all read between the lines:
"A member of the Secret Six (team stalwart and hot butchie Scandal Savage) attempts to bring back a fallen loved one (her sexy-as girlfriend the fan-fav Female Fury KNOCKOUT) by using the demonic 'Get Out of Hell Free' card stolen (Oh, right, they're villains...) back in the first arc of the series (Yes, you have been waiting over two years for this.)"
See, what'd I tell you? Clear as day! Also, ABOUT DANG TIME!

Daken: Dark Wolverine #6
It's the conclusion of the Daken's bid to take over the corrupt island of Madripoor! Will he bed Tiger Tyger? Will he murder that police office/dad character with the super-cute and super-defenseless family at home? Or will he sleep with the police officer and kill Tyger? Or sleep with both and then kill everyone else? With this anti-heroic sociopath you never know! And that's why we luv 'im!

But seriously, I hope the policeman's daughter makes it out okay and with a full ride scholarship to that awesome private school she just got into. #invested

X-Factor #216
So evidently Spider-Man and Black Cat and J Jonah Jameson are in this issue? Because "JJJ hates superheroes so how is XFI still operating, oh let's say they do him favors and make it a crossover with Spider-Man!" - The pitch for this issue (Just kidding, Peter David doesn't make pitches! He just CC's his editors when he e-mails his scripts to the artist!) ANYWAY, the previews show Shatterstar being all mysteriously bisexual (or omni-sexual????) and STILL sexually frustrated (b/c dealing with a pregnant Rahne is going to make Rictor LESS totally gay for Shatterstar), so expect some a) shirtless drama, b) sword-fighting, and c) hot queer guys talking about their relationships. A.k.a., what dreams are made of!

House of Mystery #35
The conclusion to Fig's big over-arching storyline about the Conception. Should be a hoot. We might even get some Tursig cameo-ing but that seems like a bit of a stretch for the plot to accomodate. And he certainly won't be shirtless on a New York rooftop, horny, brooding, and playing chess. See, what'd I tell you? Dreams!!!!

Superqueeros! for February 2nd, 2010

I just finished working 28 out of the past 41 hours, so here's a quick list of the queer-featuring comics coming out this week!

Daken: Dark Wolverine #5
Secret Six #30
House of Mystery #34
Pet Shop of Horrors: Tokyo Volume 8

Happy reading! :D

Superqueeros! for December 10th, 2010

Wow, this week is pretty slim pickings... Torchwood didn't ship last week, so hopefully it'll be in stores this week. But other than that we just have What If?'s Baby Daken (cuuuute!) and the varied and troubled cast of House of Mystery to "bring the queer" to comics this week.

What If? Wolverine Father
This issue asks, "What would Daken be like if Wolverine had raised him?" It appears to imply that a killing-machine-for-a-Dad might not be the most nurturing (or different) scenario for Baby D, but Wolvie was the best friend of all the Kitties, Jubilees, Marrows, and Pixies that were sheltered by the X-men over the years, so he might make an excellent father. What do you think? And is Daken still going to be the queer we know and love given the radically different rearing he's about to face? Only one way to find out! #buyit

House of Mystery #32
Like Dorothy from Kansas, the House of Mystery and its owner Fig were swept away from their friends and foundations to face their final foes last issue. Meanwhile, Abel re-opens the House of Secrets to quench the thirst of the lost souls who are demanding a table at which to tell their tales. Who knows if we'll see Tursig this issue (I'm assuming the House of Secrets is also located in the bazaar), but I think one of the women in the main cast may also be queer (there was this one throw-away line last issue that piqued my interest), so maybe this book has more of an LGBT cast than I thought!

SuperQueeros! for November 3rd, 2010

If Halloween is "Gay Christmas" than this Wednesday is is GayGeek Boxing Day. Check out all the superqueeros this week!

X-Men: To Serve and Protect #1
In the heroic age the X-men are... cops? Vigilantes? It's a little unclear and while the title of this limited series implies the former, the preview of THE ANOLE STORY implies the latter. That's right: Anole + Rockslide, perhaps the only openly gay/straight bromance, are hitting the streets of San Fran to, well, serve and protect. But their style is less good cop, bad cop and more Leonardo and Casey Jones. Which actually makes this story MORE AWESOME. #pickoftheweek

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #39
It's the middle of the end and, if the cover is a spoiler, it looks like Joss may be going for the end-of-season main-cast-death. It appears that Dawn will be in mortal danger so... is he going for a positive or negative emotional effect? J/k, I love Dawn! But what are your thoughts? Think the Key is finally going to be put to good use? Would you miss Dawn if she were gone? Or is the cover to the right the answer to your every prayer?

The Authority #28
"Sarah Rainmaker will astonish". Okay, that was part of the solicit for this comic, so I think we all know what we need to do this week: #BuyThisComic. Also, space aliens, other characters, blah, blah, vampire emergency, blah, RAINMAKER. #SoExcited!!!!!!!!!

Secret Six #27
The girls are getting the best stories this week! Scandal gets to go head to head with Bane, her (unwanted?) surrogate father figure!!! Talk about character- AND action-driven plotting! Gail is certainly bringing her A game to this story arc: just look at the COVER! Don't miss out!

House of Mystery #31
The solicit for this issue says that the aftermath of the witches' war will be revealed, so Tursig might make an appearance. It's meant to be a stand-alone issue, though, so I'm not holding my breath.

SuperQueeros! for October 6th, 2010

Welcome to October! This is my favourite month: leaves are changing color, the weather is cooling down, Halloween is on the horizon, and it's my birthday month! So which queer-featuring comics are coming out this inaugural Wednesday?

Buffy The Vampire Slayer #37
Spike is back, Angel is back, Riley is back... The only prior season love-interest missing is... SUNNYVILLE! Yes, the answer to solving the havoc of Season 8 is to return to the Hellmouth we all know and love! I'm assuming that it's to face down the Master again, but Spike (and the writers) is the only one who knows for sure. Maybe it'll be that he and Angel have to make out??? With the Master??? #nowitisjustweird

The Authority #27
Rescue mission!!!! Some meanie aliens have stolen everyone and Swift, River, and some others (Rainmaker?) have to get them back! Before they're tortured to death! Only 3 issues left before the Wildstorm White Out! With so little time left, what exactly is about to go down?????

House of Mystery #30
More Tursig this month??? Probably! I mean, he has to become a kick-butt general by December, so this month he's probably going to have to take a stand against his crush and wrest away control of the goblin army! I'm guessing. Also this month: a killer ribbon! (hunh??????) #getit

Secret Six #26
Secret Six bloodbath, part 2! Scandal has a team, Bane has a team, and only Six will be left standing (by 2011)!! This is what we in the industry (actuarial science? blogging? being human?) like to call AWESOME. Super villains were made to fight, but very rarely do we get to see them win! #excited!!

Madame Xanadu #27
Touch! Part 4 of the 6-part senses storyline for Madame Xanadu is all about a cold-hearted beauty, averse to physical contact and whose touch brings terror! Set in the swinging '60's with art by Celia Calle, this is sure to be an interesting tale and a visual extravaganza!

Monday, August 2, 2010

SuperQueeros! for August 4th, 2010

Happy August! Four brand new Wednesdays await us, so let's see what the queer superheroes are up to in Week One!

The Authority #25
It's one part denouement and one part... nouement(?) this issue as Hawksmoor explains his super-secret ultimate-weapon-secret that he kept from the crew until last issue, just in time for the Carrier to reach its final destination. But where or to what has the Carrier been taking the Authority? And who, what, and how is it being guarded? (Because it wouldn't be a story without someone guarding it/he/she!) Also, Rainmaker is so the star of this cover!

Secret Six #24
Okay... I'm confused. The solicit for this month's Secret Six literally reads: "In a small, corrupt mining boom-town, six remarkable strangers who hate each other band together in a bloody last stand against an army set on destroying them all!" Have we warped back in time to the creation of the Secret Six? In the Old West? And why doesn't Deadshot dress like that more often? And will Knockout still be alive???

The Rawhide Kid #3
Another penultimate issue as Rawhide Kid tells his origin story right before he faces off against the Sensational Seven. This piques my interest a little bit: will Rawhide's story be as blatantly stereotypical as his current status quo? Or will we get a more nuanced, interesting origin? This issue could be a game changer for how I see Marvel's most fierce gun fighter. Stand by to judge!

House of Mystery #28
The witches are off and they're taking Fig with them! Given that the witches have hired the goblins to fight their war with them, and that Tursig narrates the story-within-the-story next issue, I think there's a pretty good chance that they're taking everyone's fav gay goblin along for the ride! I wonder what he's like on long road trips...

Wednesday, July 7, 2010

SuperQueeros! for July 8th, 2010

Happy (belated) Independence Day! Remember, the long holiday weekend means that comics ship on Thursday this week, so don't expect to find any brand new goodies at your comic book store today. But, oh man, tomorrow? Tomorrow expect EVERYTHING:

The Young Avengers: The Children's Crusade #1
That's right! Billy and Teddy and Heinberg and Cheung all back together again (no homo [WAIT, TOTALLY HOMO])! And they're about to go find the scarletest betch of all, the Scarlet Witch! This is the event of the year DECADE for any fanboy or girl of gays, magic, or Marvel, and it starts TOMORROW!!!!!! Plus, now with gay kisses! #SWOON

House of Mystery #27
Tursig gets more screen time as we get to the halfway point of the year that promises to see everyone's favourite gay goblin become a warrior king and a major player in the HoM universe. The solicits promise "changes" in this issue, and Tursig is even featured on the cover. If there's one issue of HoM you buy this year, it's looking like this is it!

The Authority #24

All that deep space mojo that the Authority pissed off last month? Yeah, it's attacking them now. Let's hope Rainmaker makes it through the day, slays the Aegean zombie, and gets the girl!

The Secret Six #23
Gail Simone is on break for the next storyline, but John Ostrander isn't pulling any punches. Scandal Savage is going to have to fight for her life as the tables get turned on the Secret Six when they become the prey of some wealthy, amoral predators. Hopefully Ostrander and RB Silva (pencils) will be able to capture Baine's and Catman's inner shirtless-ness. #complexstuff

The Rawhide Kid #2
Ugh. When Marvel told us that they were updating their ruff-and-tuff, coded-gay cowboy character to be explicitly out, they forgot to mention that they were going to completely rewrite his personality. Am I missing something? Is this new Rawhide Kid a harbinger of queer awesome-nocity, or simply trite lip service to a hypothetical gay populace that lives everyday like it's a Queer Eye premiere? I mean, I will park my butt in front of some Bravo, don't get me wrong. But "The Good, the Bad, and the Fabulous"? Really Marvel? Reeeeaaaaaally?

Monday, April 5, 2010

SuperQueeros! for April 7th, 2010

Which Superheroes are also SuperQueeros this week? Let's find out!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #34
OMG NO THEY DIDN'T! Yes they did! So last issue (or two months ago, thnx spoilers) we found out who Twilight is and this week we get some answers. Or at least the other characters start asking the big questions. And speaking of "Big" if Twilight isn't the Big Bad, who is? And will he/she/it sparkle? And why are Buffy and Angel going at it if nookie de-souls him? He is still a vamp again, right? Wait, wasn't he in sunlight last issue? #WTF

The Authority #21
I have never done such an about face on a title as I have had to for the Authority and the rest of the Wildstorm-verse. A few weeks ago I was trash-talking their "vanishing queers" policy to no end, but now I see that I was duped. Rainmaker, Apollo, and Midnighter are all still active and being written to grand effect, just in completely different titles! Apollo is kind of just floating through whatever title needs a deus ex machina (literally), Midnighter is kicking butt on Earth in Wildcats, and Rainmaker is along for the crazy ride of the newly minted Authority. And both titles are rocking OUT. Wildstorm, and the Authority in particular, has thrived when they've chucked the rule of verisimilitude out the window and apocalypse-d their Wildstorm-verse into a planet-wide hellhole, and right now they're in the middle of the biggest and baddest version of such an apocalypse that I've ever read! So grab some back issues and jump in. I know I'm eating my words and LOVING every bite!

House of Mystery #24
There's a murder and the goblins are angry, which means bazaar politics which means Tursig the gay troll!!! (I hope at least... Not sure what his roll in the book is, but he seems to be connected more to the bazaar than the actual House of Mystery) Plus, the feature story-within-a-story is called "Romantic Comedy, with Corpses", so this whole book seems to be fixing to ROCK. #getit

Tuesday, February 2, 2010

Superqueeros! for February 3rd, 2010

What comics are coming out on February 3rd that feature queer characters? We've got your run down right here!

This week's list is on the short side, but every book is top-notch!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #32
The subtitle to this issue should be "Buffy Tests Superman Cliches". Something has super-powered our favorite erstwhile cheerleader and she spends the first bit of this issue testing the limits of her new powers. Now, I'm sure whatever pumped her up is horrifying, inhuman, and at the cost of Slayers' lives, but right now she can (guiltlessly) jump over pagodas! Awesome-sauce! Plus, this is the beginning of the end of Buffy season eight! It's the first issue of the penultimate chapter (the last good jumping on point!), and we're finally gonna find out who Twilight is (if we avoided the internet spoilers). I'm excited, Willow's re-powered, and this train ain't stopping for no man, queer, or super-charged Slayer!

The Question #37
I love Renee Montoya as the Question, but evidently everybody on comixology loves Vic Sage a million times more. Coincidentally, "a million" is about how many people are pulling this Blackest Night tie-in that pits zombie-Sage against Montoya. The only title pulled more this week is Marvel's Ultimate X (can the strong guy on this team PLEASE be a grey version of Wuvable Oaf?), so if your comic store is out of it, scour the streets of your city or sell your first born, but whatever you do, don't miss out on the premiere gay/zombie crossover of the year!

House of Mystery #22
This title has promised to feature the only openly gay goblin super-warrior by the end of this year, so jump on while he's still a lovable, bumbling goof! Plus, the main character, Fig, has just found out that she has a cruel, sadistic brother, hell bent on becoming her new best friend. Hilarity, violence, and cute stories-with-in-a-story are bound to unfold; be there when it happens!

Blackest Night: Wonder Woman #3 (of 3)
And finally, my most anticipated title of the month, Star Sapphire Wonder Woman! Officially, I have nothing else to say beyond "AWESOME". This concept is just too amazing to go wrong! Unofficially, here's some advice: If you don't understand what all the astonishment is about, learn yourself some knowledge: http://www.wikipedia.org/
