SuperQueeros! for October 23rd, 2013

Astonishing X-Men, J.H. Williams III's run on Batwoman, and now Supurbia: All the best books of the last three years seem to be coming to a conclusion this month!!! This week we wrap up the second volume of Grace Randolph and Russell Dauterman's amazing and innovative take on the superhero supergroup with Supurbia (Vol 2) #12. Plus a who cadre of more run-of-the-mill 'queeros!

Supurbia #12
The swan song of the tightest, most consistently mind-blowing book of 2013!
  • Hella is supremely powerful now, but also full-on Sith. Is she going to devour her neighbors like the Dark Phoenix at an all-you-can-eat solar system?
  • Ruth's robo-plot has been exposed, but her army's invasion plan is already in it's, possibly irreversible, end game! Is the Supurbia-verse about to go all Wildstorm: World's End
  • Sovereign was broken by his defeat at the hands of his romantic rival, so how will he rally now that his amour is the arch?
  • It seems that Gio and Paul are back and more together than ever: Will we see a happy ending for this dysfunctional and perfect power couple???
  • And, the real question on everyone's minds, will the ineffable Zari bring to bear her famous pluck and save the day, Cammi-style?

SuperQueeros! for September 5th, 2012

It's Zero Hour, folks! Yes, one year after the launch of the new 52 each title is getting an issue #0 origin issue! Not sure why DC wants to do this, other than providing the opportunity to tie up some plot holes and ret-con some of their newly minted cannons for this year's Trinity War, but at least the covers look cool!

X-Factor #234
The "Five Days That Change X-Factor" is on Day 3. Strong Guy is now Bad Guy, Darwin is a demon hunter, and Rahne is single-mom-ing it up with her pup. But that's not enough! No, the destruction of X-Factor continues this week when someone goes crazy! It's no surprise that, given that her BF is featured heavily in the post-AvX universe, the comics gods have chosen Polaris for this not-at-all-cliche fate. After all, how else could they unencumber Havok? A long distance relationship with a non-traditional, complex, and flawed set of rules permitting sexual tension with new teammates but requiring angsty, angsty monogamy?

BWAHAHAHA, be serious! Making your ex insane is much easier!

But enough of my tomfoolery! It looks like Lorna is going to find out who her real mom is and tumble into some sort of "Lovecraftian" insanity. So she's the daughter of Magneto and Cthulu?

Suddenly I'm more okay with this story.

Stormwatch #0
See the stuff that Stormwatch did before we joined their narrative! Since issue #1 dealt with Midnighter and Apollo's recruitment I'm not sure if we will have any sort of queer characters at all, but they are gracing the cover, so I will allow for the possibility of an appearance!

Avengers Academy #36
Striker: disfigured and undone! Hazmat: irreparably toxic! Mettle: right back to the feeling-less shell he was two months ago! And everyone else is powerless! Things do not appear to be going well, which can only mean one thing: they're about to get worse!!

Issue of Note:
The new Green Lantern is showing up in Green Lantern #0 this week!

SuperQueeros! for May 16th, 2012

I studied too long for my next actuarial exam so... Blitzkreig!

Batwoman #9
"To Drown the World" chapter two! Six stories, only one Batwoman. Will these disparate pieces start to fall together?

X-Factor #236
Check out the cover!!!! '90's-TASTIC! And promises of revealing some of the Longshot/Shatterstar "familial" logistics!

Wonder Woman #9
Wondy Saves Zola from Hell, chapter two! Meanwhile, Apollo and Ares are colluding...

Avengers Academy #30
More Herc! More Stiker! More Lightspeed! Yeah, next time this book'll trump X-Factor for top billing...

Justice League #9
Who knows what's happening in this book. But Wonder Woman is in it. <3Diana

Hellblazer #291
Epilogue to the Hell-journey story!

SuperQueeros! for May 2nd, 2012

It's my brother's birthday on the 2nd! Happy birthday, lil' bro! The comics industry got you some SWEET-AS presents!

Edit: This title didn't show up this week. :(
Supurbia #3
"Everything I touch turns to gold" - Grace Randolph
My new favorite comic!!! Have you seen Agent Twilight???? No wonder Night Fox switched teams, that boy is FIIIIIIIINE! Anyway, the premise is that this issue a new perspective on the classic climactic-battle issue. While robots are attacking the UN (sooo JSA #yawn), this book answers the question "What's happening at the homestead?" (fresh POV!) I'm really excited to see... well, everything in this book! Grace Randolph is killing it on script, and the art by Russell Dauterman is both solid and consistent, something you don't normally find on titles with 50% female characters. Like I said: LOVE. #getit

Stormwatch #9
Is this cover hot?
Apollo and Midnighter (fan favs, my favs) fight "Skallox" (purportedly fan fav, defo not my fav) and his connection to Stormwatch (Oh Gaga, is he sticking around????? Ugh.) is revealed. Unless his connection to Stormwatch is the ability to control the Carrier's latent Daemonite capacity to 'ship all my favorite couples I am NOT INTERESTED. ...But the possibility of that being the case means that I am totes mcghost buying this 'sue...

Avengers Academy #29
...And the first page is naked Hercules. CORRECT. What next? Redonk AvX sleepover? Why not! Watch as Gen Hope, some of the X-Club, all those spare X-kids with no team, and the AA misfits mix it up during the biggest crossover since the last big crossover! The Runaways story was pretty good though... let's see what Gage does with this one!

Teen Titans Annual #1
An annual!!!!??!!! I am very excited!!! Bunker front and center on the cover??? EXCELLENT. It's the TT vs the LL (Legion Lost, a title which I have not read because Gravity Kid is not in it) in a giant, killer gauntlet. The nineties truly are back! :D

X-Factor #235
Peter David continues his tromp through the "Kick Ass" archetype and gives Shatterstar a berserker rage. Will the love of his man stop his bloody rampage? BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE TOTES KAWAII OMG #1direction!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hack/Slash #5
This is the last issue in "Monster Baiting". Evidently it is a game changer? I hope the change is that Cassie pulls a Willow and is a lesbian with exclusively-lady-relationships from now on. Oh! Maybe Samhain transitions! #probablyright

Plus Earth 2 #1 is coming out... Think we'll see Obsidian?

SuperQueeros! for April 4th, 2012

Only three comics this week, but all of them SO GOOD:

Supurbia #2
With Night Fox's queer indiscretions coming to light, this series earns itself a place in the hallowed ranks of superqueero comics. With the amazingness of the art, story, and writing themselves, it's earned itself a place forever in my heart. This book rocks. #buyit and see why the wives of superheroes are the new super-team burning up the sales racks!!

Avengers Academy #28
The second (and final) crossover issue with the Runaways! With the Runaways thinking Pym is out to institutionalize them, barely staying civil with the Academy students, and currently stuck in the mystical dino-dimension from which Reptil's powers come this issue is sure to take this storyline out with a roar!

Stormwatch #8
The battle with the gravity miners wraps up, as does Paul Jenkins' run. I'm interested to see how he closes up his run, given that Jenkins has shepherded us through a tumultuous beginning that set up quite a few long-term plot threads. Hopefully none of the hanging threads gets tied up when the gravity miners just, say, kill the Prince of Lies or something equally as deus ex blackhole.

SuperQueeros! for March 7th, 2011

So comixology has a preview of Avengers: The Children's Crusade, but no issue seems forth coming. What we do have is new installments of some of the best Queer-inclusive books on the shelf today!

EDIT: AVENGERS THE CHILDREN'S CRUSADE CAME OUT TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! READ IT!!!!!!!!!

Stormwatch #7
Last issue ended with the Projectionist revealing the coming of the GRAVITY MINERS! I don't know what that means, or how it will play out (Well? Crappy? Gravity-well?), but it expands the universe of Stormwatch while we wait for the Planetary-esque storyline they established last issue to pick up, so I can't be against it.

And speaking of last issue, I love Paul Jenkins' Midnighter! He's... such a bad-ass! Like, really, truly, the explicitly gay Batman! He even says, "I'm the damn Midnighter!", as if Paul Jenkins were an awesome-r Frank Miller! And Apollo really doesn't suck as much either. In the earlier incarnation of the character he became a sort of shadow to Midnighter, a sub-y muscle bunny good only for kisses and deus ex machina. He's still a little directionless (if he hates superheroes why is he joining Stormwatch???), but I've done stupid things for a boy before, and this cocky Midnighter is seducing ME. What chance does 2-D Apollo have if Midnighter's appeal works on three dimensional people?? Basically I'm loving this reboot, especially now that they offed Adam One.

But, anyway, gravity miners. And stuff.

Avengers Academy #27
The Runaways!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, Chase is alive and Gert isn't. Who KNOWS what Kathryn Immonen's cliffhanger even meant now, but we get an issue of Striker vs. Victor (HOT) and the first reunion of Karolina and Julie Power since the Loners debuted in volume 2 of Runaways! Also HOT!! #fangasm

i, Zombie #23
It's Gwen vs a mad scientist. Maybe some Spot too?

SuperQueeros! for February 22nd, 2012

It's an Avengers assault this week! Avengers: The Children's Crusade wraps up, the who-killed-Jocasta story in Avengers Academy comes to a close, and the JLD take a breath and collect themselves before next month's vampire-apocalypse!

Avengers: The Children's Crusade #9
This is it! The last issue of the Young Avengers series that took the Marvel U from Decimation to the doorstep of AvX! Last issue ended with the supposed death of Stature, but the cover of this issue features every team member except Tommy... With the promise of a new Young Avengers line-up by the end of the issue, and with a reality-warping sorceress in their midst, who knows what fates will befall our heroes!
Sorry, this is next month!

Avengers Academy #26
Jocasta's back to set the record straight: she's not dead! Evidently she faked her own death so that she could join Veil in working for Jeremy Briggs to create an alternative to the Avengers Academy. (Golly, that's a mouthful!) And now she's back to downgrade the systems at the Academy. You know all those cool upgrades she gave to the Windows Professional suite? Yeah, that's her code, and she wants it back. That'll rock the Academy back to the Stone Age, though... think Giant-Man will let her take it back?

Justice League Dark #6
With Enchantress brought back to sanity, the team goes their seperate ways to process the events of the past five issues. Oh, and also they hate each other and are not a team. Hopefully Xanadu will be able to corral them back together before next month's issue though: the team has to help the cast of I, Vampire fend off a vampire-apocalypse!!!

SuperQueeros! for February 1st, 2012

Hello February! What 'queero comics do you have for us this year??

Avengers Academy #25
Reptil's gone all evil and stuff!!! At least that's what I've gathered from the cover of this issue. The solicit says that this issue is a mega-brawl between a student, another student, and a teacher. Fingers crossed that when the dust settles Reptil isn't the most evil guy in the room!

i, Zombie #22
Spot is tied up in his basement!?! And not in a good way??? The cast is split up and machinating as the post-zombie-invasion story gears up. And you thought hipsters were scary when they only looked dead!

Stormwatch #6
Throw down in the Carrier! Looks like the Authority are finally going to find out where exactly their inter-dimensional ship comes from. And since this is going to have consequences in Grifter and Voodoo, I'm betting that those odd controls were designed for Daemonites.

X-Factor#231
Can Madrox get home??? Watch Captain America punch Tony Stark and find out!!!!

SuperQueeros! for December 14th, 2011

Batwoman #4
Firebird has taken to the streets, Kate's alienated everyone in her life, and the child-napping water-witch is still on the loose! Things are really not looking good for this book's heroine, but the book is still as good looking as ever! #buyit

Avengers Academy #23
As noted in the post below this title is (semi-)newly queer-tastic! Plus X-23 is joining this issue! Wouldn't it be weird if she were joining as staff? She's almost there, if you disregard the raging angst. Anyway! Julie Power and Striker! #Doublequeeros!

(Veronica #210 Veronica Presents) Kevin Keller #4
It's the last Kevin Keller! Well, the last one before his continuing series in February. But it's a momentous occasion: like Kurt on Glee, Kevin Keller is running for class president! Will Veronica's scheming echo the disastrous effects of Rachel's awkward efforts to elect her gbf, or will Kevin rise above adversity and claim the presidency? #plainfun

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9: Freefall #4
The new cast members start snooping in this issue (finally!). With Buffy in peril and the Scoobies ignoring her, hopefully the newbies will put the stash of stakes and the night-roaming together and come to the aid of their rogue slayer-roommate!

The New Avengers #19
Avengers vs. Dark Avengers!!! But whose side is Victoria Hand really on????

SuperQueeros! Back Issue Alert!

What's this protein-rich substance on my face????!!??!

Oh, it's egg. Because I have egg on my face. Because I missed tracking one of the campiest bisexual superheroes to ever grace the pages of a Marvel magazine: Julie Power!!!! And for that I am TOTES sorry.

In case you don't know, Julie came out when she was running with a short-lived but critically acclaimed group of ex-heroes called "The Loners". And, in case you're counting, yes, every rainbow-trailing lady in oh-so-subtle 616 is a flag-waving superqueero. A fact which I forgot until one of Power's new teammates decided to jump on the out-and-proud bandwagon and Avengers Academy writer Christos Gage gave this interview.

Did you go read the interview? It's good. Way, way heavy, but good. I went through a lot of emotions reading the piece, but Gage echoed a lot of the worries that I've heard from ill-augering fans and he seemed up on his research. I'm hoping that means that this is going to be a crazy poignant, crazy complex story. Plus, a new gay means a new love interest possibility for Graymalkin!

And it means that every little LGBTAllies comic book fan has some holiday reading to do: all 22 issues of Avengers Academy! (Or just start with #21 if you're only reading for Julie ;D )
