SuperQueeros! for May 7th, 2014

Ah, the afterglow of Free Comic Book Day! ... Okay, enough reminiscing. The world is a'turning and comics are a'churning! It's time to get MOAR SuperQueeros: all that's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, transgender, and queer in comics today!

The Movement #12
The last issue! What an awesome and queer cast this book has: Rainmaker, Virtue, and Burden (Oh, yeah, he came out at the end of the last issue) are all SuperQueeros that have come alive in this title's short run. Hopefully these kids will survive to get recruited into some Suicide Squad or another. But for now, it's time to say good-bye. How will Gail choose to (consummately) say it?

SuperQueeros! for April 2nd, 2014

Beginnings and endings: Stormwatch gives us back the old team in their last issue, Green Lantern returns to Earth 2, and Rachel Rising comes to end... but also a beginning? SuperQueeros: all that's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, transgender, and queer in comics today!

Stormwatch #30
Stormwatch has broken the reality-warping spell that they've been under, and the solicit promises that they will have a new role in the DCnU as of this issue! I wonder what it will be, and if we will get back any of old Stormwatch's unresolved plot threads?

SuperQueeros! for March 5th, 2014

Ugh, look at that She-Hulk cover! I am in love! Also, this week we have a motley collection of some of the best... SuperQueeros: all that's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, transgender, and queer in comics today!

She-Hulk #2
Not sure if there are going to be any 'queeros in this issue, but that cover!

SuperQueeros! For February 5th, 2014

It's a week for expanding casts! Relatives and prospective members show up in Movement, former enemies join the fight in Stormwatch, another new old face graces in Earth 2, and Kamala Kahn debuts as Ms. Marvel! (That last one isn't a 'queero title, as far as I know.) It's an exciting time for... SuperQueeros: all that's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, transgender, and queer in comics today!

Movement #9
Batgirl guests and we meet Burden's brother!!! So, do you think he'll be human, or monstrous? And what can Batgirl, still under the impression that she murdered her brother, tell Burden about family conflict?

SuperQueeros! for January 8th, 2014

Happy New Year! Thankfully, we start out the first new comic book day of the new year with some of our old favorite... SuperQueeros: all that's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, transgender, and queer in comics today!

Young Avengers #15
Tears! We say good-bye Kieron Gillen's awesome run on YA this week. But with the all-star (and almost-all-queer) set of charas on the cover, who knows what 'queeroic goodies it hides?

SuperQueeros! for December 4th, 2013

It's the end of the year and the end of one of this year's most awesome books. Fearless Defenders, we hardly knew ya! Say goodbye to Dr. Riggs, Valkyrie, and Ren this week, and hello to all this week's usual... SuperQueeros: all that's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, transgender, and queer in comics today!

Fearless Defenders #12
In this, the final issue of the unjustly cancelled Fearless Defenders, there's a new cosmically powered teammate, Caroline LeFey meets one of her parents, the Defenders make a stand against the Doom Maidens, AND we get some resolution to the whole Dr. Riggs/Valkyrie thing. That seems like a lot for a single issue of a comic book... Hopefully it won't be 32 pages of exposition like Infinity: The Hunt was last week!

SuperQueeros! for August 7th, 2013

OMG, It's Kevin's first kiss! Plus the trade paperback of an awesome anthology and a whole lot more... SuperQueeros: all that's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, transgender, and queer in comics today!
Kevin Keller #10
Kevin Keller kisses a boy for the first time! TOO CUUUUUUTE! Also, the cover is a commission requested by my friend Nathan at MegaCon (he's the gay featured in this article about superhero tattoos)!

The Movement #4
With Rainmaker in the mix, there's more than one sort of storm breaking on the beseiged police department! Plus, Mouse's secret origin!

Earth 2 #15
Green Lantern falls victim to the hounds of Apokolips!

Artifacts #30
Finch is front and center as she's distracted from her primary mission by a begging Judge. What help does he need?

Prophet #38
Not sure if the children of Badrock are the charges of John Ka, but whoever's responsible for them better get their butt in gear before they're turned into living weapons!

Stormwatch #23
The Kollective's secrets are uncovered!

All New X-Men #15
Mystique will probably be in this book, but it's mostly about Cyc losing his gf. #yawn

X-Factor #260
The episodic nature of these final issues make me think that we won't be getting any Rictor or Shatterstar in this issue, but Polaris and Quicksilver do duke it out!

No Straight Lines: Four Decades Of Queer Comics (TP)
In case you missed this awesome anthology on your tablet or in hardcover, you can be the proud owner of the trade paperback starting this Wednesday! It's really funny, inspiring, a lil' sexy, and all around awesome!

SuperQueeros! for July 3rd, 2013

Happy Pride! Have you checked out the comixology.com spotlight on LGBT comics? I'm definitely checking out Lost Raven, the series about a poz Kazar-type! Otherwise the week is pretty light... Only two books popped up on my sensors as queer-inclusive. Surprisingly, they are BOTH from DC! SuperQueeros: all that's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, transgender, and queer in comics today!

EDIT: THE MOVEMENT #3 is out today!!!!!!!! Did you see lat months awesome reveal of the most awesome bisexual weather weild-er the world has ever seen????????????

Earth 2 #14
Alan Scott - our gay Green Lantern - joins up with Doctor Fate and the Flash to take on Steppenwolf, the invader from Apokolips who killed Earth 2's prior trinity of Wonder Woman, Superman, and Bruce Wayne. But where is Hawkgirl in all this?

Stormwatch #22
Apollo and Lobo fight! Then Lobo joins Stormwatch! If that's the PREVIEW, what more could happen in this issue????

Superqueeros! for December 22nd, 2010

HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND KWANZAA!!!!!! The comic book industry can sense when you're about to get gift cards to your local comic book store (call it a Spectacular Spider-Man Sense) and so they're throwing caution to the wind and inundating the market with new comics on Wednesday. I'm serious: things about the get crazy. So who's gay on Wednesday?

Wildcats #30

Did you read The Authority #29? Do you know who the new Doctor is? Are you ready for The End of All Things (Wildstorm)? This is THE ISSUE, guys! Apocalypse came to Wildstorm and it's about to be retconned, solved, or otherwise resolved as we meet the fastest Doctor ever to hold the title! Expect Rainmaker, Apollo, and Midnighter cameos, as well as EVERY OTHER WILDSTORM CHARACTER EVER. If Christmas is about family, then this is the most Christmas-y comic you'll read this month! #soexcited

New Mutants #20

TEAM UP. We all know that Karma is the most important New Mutant (certainly the most interesting), but FINALLY the universe agrees. With every other New Mutant held captive by the Purgatory Babies, Karma and Magik are going to rally Utopia and save their friends! Well, unless they're too late. Then the world is going to end. And in Marvel there's no Doctor to fix everything when your planet gets turned into a hell-dimension. #whoops!

Uncanny X-Men #531

Quarantine continues! E'erybody on Utopia is sick! Wolvie is DYING! Rockslide is... basically over? How does a psychic entity get sick again? PLOT HOLES ASIDE, Northstar is going to be KICKING BUTT this month! As one of the 5 X-men outside of the quarantine, he, Dazzler, Pixie, Angel, and Storm are going to be putting the smack down on Sublime's latest home-made mutants and, hopefully, the Collective Man! People have criticized this storyline as being, basically, exactly what Grant Morrison did during New X-Men, to which I say: New X-Men was AMAZING!!!!! Don't knock a working formula! And buy this book, even though Greg Land is doing the art!

Daken: Dark Wolverine #4

Okay, so this book is called "Daken: Dark Wolverine" but, according to the solicit, Daken is going to be forging a new identity after faking his death last issue? Meaning that this comic book is about to NOT be about Daken, since he's presumably going to be selecting a new moniker, and is DEFINITELY not about "Dark Wolverine" (sooo 2009) ? So why does it retain the outdated name? PLOT HOLES ASIDE, Marjorie Liu and Daniel Way rock at writing, so this is going to be a ball-busting issue no matter who it stars. I wonder if Daken's going to refrain from using his claws in his new identity? The cover shows him fighting the FF; will Johnny et al. be able to recognize their former friend? And what is the next step in Daken's plan for world conquest???

Honorable Mentions after the cut!
Wonder Woman #605

Diana vs The Morrigan! The solicit tells us that Diana is facing off against one of the three Morrigan, and Wikipedia tells us that there is no definitive story to that. Evidently in Latin texts morrigans are scary evil monster ladies and in Ireland it's a proper noun that refers to either a war goddess or a trio of goddesses. Does this mean that for JMS's Wonder Woman she's defending her people and her religion against the very real attacks on them by other pantheons? There are more questions than answers here, but never have I been more excited for a Wonder Woman book than this month! Irish goddesses fighting the champion of the Greeks? This is what comics were made for!

X-Men: Legacy #243

As Jason noted, Bling! is one of the X-Men within the radius of Karima's wrath, so even though this book seems to be focusing more on Hope helping Julian deal with the anger he has over loosing his arms we may get some queer cameos! Also, Mike Carey is a god amongst scribes.

X-Men #6

This is the ultimate issue of X-men vs. Vampires! It's the mutants against Dracula, perhaps one of the X-Men's most classic conflicts. But this time there's an additional element: Jubilee is among the enemy! How will the X-men save one of their own without losing any more compatriots??? And will Bling! get to do some slaying???? #ToughSkinGang

SuperQueeros! for December 1st, 2010

How was your Thanksgiving? Filled with comic-book AWESOME-NESS? Yeah, I thought so.

This week isn't quite as gangbusters as last week, but we have four strong titles out instead of an avalanche of limited series, and almost all of them are bringing end-of-the-year resolution to the plot threads you love!

The Authority #29
The last issue of (this volume of) The Authority! As we all know, Wildstorm is folding into the DCU (well, it's folding, and it's owned by DC. Where or when it ends up is still a mystery.), and December is the last month for its continuing series. This issue is sure to tie into the final issue of Wildcats, but the solicit is promising that the Authority is going to make it back to Earth with a Carrier full of secrets. Will one of those secrets be the solution to Wildstorm-Earth's apocalypse? And will that solution be the answer to what is about to happen to all the Wildstorm characters? Only one way to find out! #getit

Torchwood #5
It's a Gwen one-shot and the conclusion to 'Broken' in this month's Torchwood issue! I'm a Gwen fan, so I'm looking forward to this story, especially to finding out where in her timeline this story is set. Plus, Gary Russel has been knocking it out of the park with the Ianto-Jack banter in 'Broken', so I trust it will be a satisfying finish for the back-up story started way back in issue #1! It's the end of an era, so be sure to pick it up!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer#39
Speaking of eras ending, this is the second-to-last issue of BtVS: Season 8! And with no pre-released covers this month, expect the unexpected! Who will be the one to betray Buffy? Willow is facing a world without magic, Xander is facing a world with no room for humans, and Buffy is caught, unknowing, in the middle. As we've seen with Wildstorm, the Earths of comic books are not at all safe from the apocalyptic imaginations of writers. Where is Joss going to take this story?

Secret Six #28
It's the ultimate issue of 'Reptile Brain', the storyline that pitted Secret Six against Secret Six, promised a bloodbath with super-villain casualties, and delivered a bloodbath with super-villain... hugs? It also delivered a lot of shirtless Catman. So in the end everything worked out even-Steven. Since nobody died, though, how are the two Secret Sixes going to shake out post-conflict? Is this title about to become Secret Twelve, or are some people going to stay behind in Dinosaur-land? Or just head home after a hard day's slaughter? This month, we find out!

SuperQueeros! for November 3rd, 2010

If Halloween is "Gay Christmas" than this Wednesday is is GayGeek Boxing Day. Check out all the superqueeros this week!

X-Men: To Serve and Protect #1
In the heroic age the X-men are... cops? Vigilantes? It's a little unclear and while the title of this limited series implies the former, the preview of THE ANOLE STORY implies the latter. That's right: Anole + Rockslide, perhaps the only openly gay/straight bromance, are hitting the streets of San Fran to, well, serve and protect. But their style is less good cop, bad cop and more Leonardo and Casey Jones. Which actually makes this story MORE AWESOME. #pickoftheweek

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #39
It's the middle of the end and, if the cover is a spoiler, it looks like Joss may be going for the end-of-season main-cast-death. It appears that Dawn will be in mortal danger so... is he going for a positive or negative emotional effect? J/k, I love Dawn! But what are your thoughts? Think the Key is finally going to be put to good use? Would you miss Dawn if she were gone? Or is the cover to the right the answer to your every prayer?

The Authority #28
"Sarah Rainmaker will astonish". Okay, that was part of the solicit for this comic, so I think we all know what we need to do this week: #BuyThisComic. Also, space aliens, other characters, blah, blah, vampire emergency, blah, RAINMAKER. #SoExcited!!!!!!!!!

Secret Six #27
The girls are getting the best stories this week! Scandal gets to go head to head with Bane, her (unwanted?) surrogate father figure!!! Talk about character- AND action-driven plotting! Gail is certainly bringing her A game to this story arc: just look at the COVER! Don't miss out!

House of Mystery #31
The solicit for this issue says that the aftermath of the witches' war will be revealed, so Tursig might make an appearance. It's meant to be a stand-alone issue, though, so I'm not holding my breath.

SuperQueeros! for October 6th, 2010

Welcome to October! This is my favourite month: leaves are changing color, the weather is cooling down, Halloween is on the horizon, and it's my birthday month! So which queer-featuring comics are coming out this inaugural Wednesday?

Buffy The Vampire Slayer #37
Spike is back, Angel is back, Riley is back... The only prior season love-interest missing is... SUNNYVILLE! Yes, the answer to solving the havoc of Season 8 is to return to the Hellmouth we all know and love! I'm assuming that it's to face down the Master again, but Spike (and the writers) is the only one who knows for sure. Maybe it'll be that he and Angel have to make out??? With the Master??? #nowitisjustweird

The Authority #27
Rescue mission!!!! Some meanie aliens have stolen everyone and Swift, River, and some others (Rainmaker?) have to get them back! Before they're tortured to death! Only 3 issues left before the Wildstorm White Out! With so little time left, what exactly is about to go down?????

House of Mystery #30
More Tursig this month??? Probably! I mean, he has to become a kick-butt general by December, so this month he's probably going to have to take a stand against his crush and wrest away control of the goblin army! I'm guessing. Also this month: a killer ribbon! (hunh??????) #getit

Secret Six #26
Secret Six bloodbath, part 2! Scandal has a team, Bane has a team, and only Six will be left standing (by 2011)!! This is what we in the industry (actuarial science? blogging? being human?) like to call AWESOME. Super villains were made to fight, but very rarely do we get to see them win! #excited!!

Madame Xanadu #27
Touch! Part 4 of the 6-part senses storyline for Madame Xanadu is all about a cold-hearted beauty, averse to physical contact and whose touch brings terror! Set in the swinging '60's with art by Celia Calle, this is sure to be an interesting tale and a visual extravaganza!

Wildstorm Goes Bye!

From newsarama.com:

Kiss Wildstorm good-bye! The home of Midnighter+Apollo and Rainmaker is soon to be a line of the past as the DC restructuring results in its closure! Everything ends this December, which means that, after the Wildcats issue out today, the denizens of the dilapidated Wildstorm-verse have 3 issues to fix their post-apocalyptic home! Limited series Welcome to Tranquility and DV8 will finish up after the December doom-date, but everything else will go on hiatus in 2011 until they can be revived as DC titles.

I'm fan-freaking-out about this development! What will happen to (my) Midnighter?!?! From a creative standpoint I know that a fan-loved pseudo-Batman is too much of a cash cow to radically retcon and that this is a perfect opportunity to breathe new life into his angst-ridden (and, frankly, super-boring) marriage, but if the Wildstorm-verse gets incorporated into the DCU, what will be the fate of a THIRD Batman? I just hope Midnighter doesn't turn into a guest cameo every time DC thinks it could use a few pink dollars!

On the upside, this could be like Marvel revamping th Ultimate line: a re-set for the books that were getting too bogged down or convoluted by their mythology/cast (Gen13, I hardly recognize you!) and a return to form for those titles that were getting it right (I love the Wildcats/Authority, but I'd like some sexual tension between Midnighter and Apollo. They're the only happily married couple who don't even look at each other...).

Conclusion: fingers crossed!

SuperQueeros! for August 4th, 2010

Happy August! Four brand new Wednesdays await us, so let's see what the queer superheroes are up to in Week One!

The Authority #25
It's one part denouement and one part... nouement(?) this issue as Hawksmoor explains his super-secret ultimate-weapon-secret that he kept from the crew until last issue, just in time for the Carrier to reach its final destination. But where or to what has the Carrier been taking the Authority? And who, what, and how is it being guarded? (Because it wouldn't be a story without someone guarding it/he/she!) Also, Rainmaker is so the star of this cover!

Secret Six #24
Okay... I'm confused. The solicit for this month's Secret Six literally reads: "In a small, corrupt mining boom-town, six remarkable strangers who hate each other band together in a bloody last stand against an army set on destroying them all!" Have we warped back in time to the creation of the Secret Six? In the Old West? And why doesn't Deadshot dress like that more often? And will Knockout still be alive???

The Rawhide Kid #3
Another penultimate issue as Rawhide Kid tells his origin story right before he faces off against the Sensational Seven. This piques my interest a little bit: will Rawhide's story be as blatantly stereotypical as his current status quo? Or will we get a more nuanced, interesting origin? This issue could be a game changer for how I see Marvel's most fierce gun fighter. Stand by to judge!

House of Mystery #28
The witches are off and they're taking Fig with them! Given that the witches have hired the goblins to fight their war with them, and that Tursig narrates the story-within-the-story next issue, I think there's a pretty good chance that they're taking everyone's fav gay goblin along for the ride! I wonder what he's like on long road trips...

Wednesday, July 7, 2010

SuperQueeros! for July 8th, 2010

Happy (belated) Independence Day! Remember, the long holiday weekend means that comics ship on Thursday this week, so don't expect to find any brand new goodies at your comic book store today. But, oh man, tomorrow? Tomorrow expect EVERYTHING:

The Young Avengers: The Children's Crusade #1
That's right! Billy and Teddy and Heinberg and Cheung all back together again (no homo [WAIT, TOTALLY HOMO])! And they're about to go find the scarletest betch of all, the Scarlet Witch! This is the event of the year DECADE for any fanboy or girl of gays, magic, or Marvel, and it starts TOMORROW!!!!!! Plus, now with gay kisses! #SWOON

House of Mystery #27
Tursig gets more screen time as we get to the halfway point of the year that promises to see everyone's favourite gay goblin become a warrior king and a major player in the HoM universe. The solicits promise "changes" in this issue, and Tursig is even featured on the cover. If there's one issue of HoM you buy this year, it's looking like this is it!

The Authority #24

All that deep space mojo that the Authority pissed off last month? Yeah, it's attacking them now. Let's hope Rainmaker makes it through the day, slays the Aegean zombie, and gets the girl!

The Secret Six #23
Gail Simone is on break for the next storyline, but John Ostrander isn't pulling any punches. Scandal Savage is going to have to fight for her life as the tables get turned on the Secret Six when they become the prey of some wealthy, amoral predators. Hopefully Ostrander and RB Silva (pencils) will be able to capture Baine's and Catman's inner shirtless-ness. #complexstuff

The Rawhide Kid #2
Ugh. When Marvel told us that they were updating their ruff-and-tuff, coded-gay cowboy character to be explicitly out, they forgot to mention that they were going to completely rewrite his personality. Am I missing something? Is this new Rawhide Kid a harbinger of queer awesome-nocity, or simply trite lip service to a hypothetical gay populace that lives everyday like it's a Queer Eye premiere? I mean, I will park my butt in front of some Bravo, don't get me wrong. But "The Good, the Bad, and the Fabulous"? Really Marvel? Reeeeaaaaaally?

Wednesday, June 2, 2010

SuperQueeros! for June 3rd, 2010

Comics come out on Thursday this week! And the only title featuring queer characters (that I know about!) is...

The Authority #23
The Authority goes Alien when a rescue mission instead introduces a super threatening alien threat aboard their ship. Rainmaker electrocutes it (I hope!). Everyone rejoices (Inevitably :P). Other, non-Rainmaker details from the solicit: The High brings the bugger aboard (Who is The High?), there is a "latest century baby" (Is Rainmaker raising it? #gayparenting), and the Carrier may have a sinister agenda (It's a spaceship that looks like a dog nose! CUTE!) . It's one-shot-ish! And basically no other books come out this week! #getit!

Monday, April 5, 2010

SuperQueeros! for April 7th, 2010

Which Superheroes are also SuperQueeros this week? Let's find out!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #34
OMG NO THEY DIDN'T! Yes they did! So last issue (or two months ago, thnx spoilers) we found out who Twilight is and this week we get some answers. Or at least the other characters start asking the big questions. And speaking of "Big" if Twilight isn't the Big Bad, who is? And will he/she/it sparkle? And why are Buffy and Angel going at it if nookie de-souls him? He is still a vamp again, right? Wait, wasn't he in sunlight last issue? #WTF

The Authority #21
I have never done such an about face on a title as I have had to for the Authority and the rest of the Wildstorm-verse. A few weeks ago I was trash-talking their "vanishing queers" policy to no end, but now I see that I was duped. Rainmaker, Apollo, and Midnighter are all still active and being written to grand effect, just in completely different titles! Apollo is kind of just floating through whatever title needs a deus ex machina (literally), Midnighter is kicking butt on Earth in Wildcats, and Rainmaker is along for the crazy ride of the newly minted Authority. And both titles are rocking OUT. Wildstorm, and the Authority in particular, has thrived when they've chucked the rule of verisimilitude out the window and apocalypse-d their Wildstorm-verse into a planet-wide hellhole, and right now they're in the middle of the biggest and baddest version of such an apocalypse that I've ever read! So grab some back issues and jump in. I know I'm eating my words and LOVING every bite!

House of Mystery #24
There's a murder and the goblins are angry, which means bazaar politics which means Tursig the gay troll!!! (I hope at least... Not sure what his roll in the book is, but he seems to be connected more to the bazaar than the actual House of Mystery) Plus, the feature story-within-a-story is called "Romantic Comedy, with Corpses", so this whole book seems to be fixing to ROCK. #getit

Monday, March 1, 2010

SuperQueeros! for March 3rd, 2010

Each week I scour the weekly solicitations for all that's queer in comic-dom. This week:

Detective Comics #862
This week it's the middle chapter in Rucka's three part, time-hopping tale of parallelism, Cutter, and the second to last issue of Batwoman's Detective run before she jumps to her own title. I'm excited to see what Rucka brings to the characters by running them next to each other, and the art by Jock is pretty baller and moody. The Cutter himself is probably the most viscerally creepy villain I've read in comics, despite that fact that he's another one of those much re-hashed, silence-of-the-lambs, collector-killer types. If you like shows like Criminal Minds, this is def the book for you!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #33
It's the one before the one where Twilight reveals his identity! That was a little bit anti-climactic, but if you've been following this book you know that BtVS is just picking up steam. They've raised the stakes with Buffy's newfound (probably temporary) abilities, and returned everyone to tip top strength (or death). Half the Scoobies are hostages and the other half have let the enemy into their camp. We know that Twilight is going to reveal himself, and many of us already know who he is, but the intense focus on that one reveal means that we know nothing about all the other, plot-driving events that are going to unfold. So what is about to go down? For once in the history of advance-solicited comics, we have no idea. EDIT: BAM! newsarama.com has an interview with the author and this issue IS the big reveal!!! #twelvetimesasexcited

Authority #20
Is that Rainmaker on the cover?????? Is this book STILL queer-inclusive with one of my fav bi characters of all time? Why does no one update the Wildstorm wiki pages? Some of these questions may be answered in this book, and as soon as one of us picks it up to find out, we'll post the answers right here! (Seriously, though, I dislike queer-exclusive Wildstorm a lot. Do you know if Sarah's in this book now?)
