SuperQueeros! for August 1st, 2012

And just to match last week's week of beginnings (Shout out to the schoolies!), this week is a week of good-byes: to a great series that I was JUST getting into, to all the DCnU books, to the queerest Academy ever to grace the pages of comics, and to Strong Guy's "good guy" image. See for yourself:

i, Zombie #28
The final issue!!! (Great cover too!) I guess it's true what they say, you can't face an elder god without losing either your mind or your continuing series. That's what's happening with Gwen: The soul-sucking, Innsmouth-generating space-Cthulu (Xitalu for short) that's menacing the planet has arrived and started chowing down on Earthlings. Luckily, Gwen has a plan. Unluckily, it involves filling herself up with so many (living) souls that she is essentially a Giant Gulp of spirits (last Friday night), then feeding herself to the space monster so that it will take a nap (food coma!). Unfortunately for the plan, however, her friends and family's penchant for sticking together in times of trouble has landed all of them in Giant Gulp ground-zero. Is saving the world worth it if you have to kill everyone you love to do it? And, more importantly, will the were-terrier get the guy before it's too late to ride off into the sunset (of existence)???

Avengers Academy #34
Thanks to AvX the Academy is closing down and, for the next four months, the kids have to decide if they're going to follow Veil to Jeremy Briggs' rival academy or... do some... other thing? It's very unclear. Their only other choice appears to be homelessness. Anyway, pressing social issues aside, Briggs has promised the kids a release from their powers! Whoo! Hazmat and Mettle might get some happiness! But there's always a cost, and this time it might be paid with lives...

(But it will probably just be paid with angst and weird deformities. #spoilers)

Stormwatch #12
All endings are beginnings too, especially with next month's issue zeroes for the DCnU books. This week Martian Manhunter breaks up with Stormwatch, ending the first era of the Stormwatch epoch. But, because he wears a cape, he has to do it the only way superheroes know how: with a knock-down, drag-out brawl! In space!

Also, later this month Stormwatch guests in I, Vampire, the village bicycle of crossovers. #RelevanceThroughForcedInteraction

X-Factor #241
Strong Guy's been dumped. And, as we all learned in Teen Wolf this week, when you die and come back your a soul gets replaced by a hottie-cidal fury that makes you exact indiscriminate vengeance on every Tyler you come across! Using a Colton Haynes!!!!

I mean, Strong Guy will probably use his fists and incredible intellect, but... I still have my fingers crossed for a Colton Haynes! #Kanima

Earth 2 #4
Bottom billing for killing minority characters. Boo! I just really hope Solomon Grundy or Rose/Thorn is Sam reincarnated... I want conflicted gay romance between equals!!! Like Catwoman!!! #AnneHathawayDreams

SuperQueeros for June 6th, 2012

After last week's queer-desert we deserve this oasis! Earth 2, Avengers Academy, Stormwatch, X-Factor: Queer character troves, old and new! PLUS, Valiant is relaunching Harbinger again! This is the Valiant version of the X-men, and in addition to being my fav title from the Valiant line (XO Manowar lost my attention after the protagonist put on clothes) it's also got a history of subverting comic book traditions. Fingers crossed that we'll get a queer-mo in the relaunch! But until then...

OH AND BY THE WAY GUYS THE WATCHMEN PREQUEL MINUTEMEN CAME OUT TODAY!

OH MY GOSH THE LAST SUPURBIA CAME OUT TOO!!!!!!!! ARGH SO MANY GOOD COMICS TODAY! (Sorry, but the tags are gonna SUCK for this entry!)

Earth 2 #2
I am very excited for this origin issue! First Earth 2 Flash is empowered by the Greek Gods (much better than the speed force), now a gay Alan Scott is going to get magical flame powers (and does his armor look a little Parallax-y to you?), and have you even SEEN the new Hawkgirl?? The Earth 2 Trinity is all about empowering minorities (and Judd Apatow's version of Jay Garrick. [I understand that "diversity" encompasses EVERYBODY, but... SIGH.])! I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover but... this series looks so good!!

Avengers Academy #31
So... I really like this book, and this story in particular. I've missed Surge something FIERCE and now she gets to duke it out with Striker for a couple of issues? That alone is so awesome that I think AvX needs to be a continuing series starring the cast of this crossover! (Also, because Dr. Kavita Rao standing next to Tigress is the EPITOME of unwitting self-parody of the comics industry.)

Stormwatch #10
Harry Tanner is back! His story thread is kick-as: the Prince of Lies is an excellent nemesis for the historically over-powered Stormwatch crew and I can't wait for the Projectionist to screw him over!  So far we've established that Stormwatch and Harry are in a race against each other to find all these powerful hallows artifacts, but we haven't seen one yet... Maybe this is the month we do!

X-Factor #237
Banshee, Wolfsbane, and Polaris take a road trip so that Rhane will stop flagellating herself over birthing a demon-god. Maybe Rictor and Shatterstar will be able to have a date night while they're out! Yeah, I realize that's only going to happen if their dinner is interrupted by a slathering wolf-bear king, but I can dream, right?

i, Zombie #26
I picked up the last issue because it seemed like a good jumping on point, and now I'm just waiting for the half-price sale so I can buy the whole series! Spot's crush on a gay guy who houses a (straight) vigilante ghost is so perfectly angst-generating that I have to read its genesis! AND it's great for bringing up the "Two-Spirit" part of the LGBTQIAT-SAetc soup! Also they're gonna fight an elder god soon so... Bonus Points for Cthulhus!

Hack/Slash #16
Speaking of self-parody, have you seen the cover of this issue? It's like... WHAT? Who green-lit this idea??????

SuperQueeros! for

I caught up on my Buffy last week! Here's the scoop...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 9: Freefall #9
So. Here's some spoilers from the last couple of issues! Remember at the start of this season when Buff-ster had a house party and couldn't really remember what happened or who fathered her child or why she got ridonkulously crunk when she's had years of life-or-death experience with the preternatural dangers of house parties AND was the lead actor in the main story of "Beer Bad" in season 4? Well guess what! She wasn't crunk, Andrew just roofied her! Well that's a relie- wait what? Evidently the world's most morally confused character (who I, at this moment shamefacedly love... I blame Tom Lenk!) thinks it's TOTES COOL to rohypnol-ize someone if you're just planning on switching their brains with their robotic clone so that she thinks she's preggers when she's late! See, not a violation at all! Anyway, Ro-Buffy's pissed too, but her fleshy body-which is hardcore experiencing Emily Lake Syndrome (The ELS!) right now-just got kidnapped by that evil, pink-haired slayer!!!! So Ro-Buffy/Blonde-Cable, Spike, and Andrew are off to save it! Also, zompires are evolving and Domestic-Problems Xander and New-Hot-Cop are out fighting them.

Ultimate Comics X-Men #11
DID YOU SEE WHAT ULTIMATE COLOSSUS DID I CAN'T TAKE IT NOOOOO STAY GOOD MY TWO-DIMENSIONAL CRUSH-GUY!!!!!!!!!!!! The Nimrods are attacking and it's up to Ororo and Piotr to find a way to stop the slaughter in the newly re-grittied Ultimate-verse. Who will escape this unrepentant slaughter? Who can stomach it? Who will alert Northstar so he can swoop in and save his boo-bear????

Superboy #9 / Legion Lost #9
The Culling crossover continues! I'm still v v v mad at them for killing Artemis, so I'm not really gonna plug Bunker much. But did you catch Danny the Street's appearance in April's Teen Titans? 'Twas hot.

i, Zombie #25
They're finally getting around to all that ominous stuff they hinted at 2 years ago.

SuperQueeros! for March 7th, 2011

So comixology has a preview of Avengers: The Children's Crusade, but no issue seems forth coming. What we do have is new installments of some of the best Queer-inclusive books on the shelf today!

EDIT: AVENGERS THE CHILDREN'S CRUSADE CAME OUT TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! READ IT!!!!!!!!!

Stormwatch #7
Last issue ended with the Projectionist revealing the coming of the GRAVITY MINERS! I don't know what that means, or how it will play out (Well? Crappy? Gravity-well?), but it expands the universe of Stormwatch while we wait for the Planetary-esque storyline they established last issue to pick up, so I can't be against it.

And speaking of last issue, I love Paul Jenkins' Midnighter! He's... such a bad-ass! Like, really, truly, the explicitly gay Batman! He even says, "I'm the damn Midnighter!", as if Paul Jenkins were an awesome-r Frank Miller! And Apollo really doesn't suck as much either. In the earlier incarnation of the character he became a sort of shadow to Midnighter, a sub-y muscle bunny good only for kisses and deus ex machina. He's still a little directionless (if he hates superheroes why is he joining Stormwatch???), but I've done stupid things for a boy before, and this cocky Midnighter is seducing ME. What chance does 2-D Apollo have if Midnighter's appeal works on three dimensional people?? Basically I'm loving this reboot, especially now that they offed Adam One.

But, anyway, gravity miners. And stuff.

Avengers Academy #27
The Runaways!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, Chase is alive and Gert isn't. Who KNOWS what Kathryn Immonen's cliffhanger even meant now, but we get an issue of Striker vs. Victor (HOT) and the first reunion of Karolina and Julie Power since the Loners debuted in volume 2 of Runaways! Also HOT!! #fangasm

i, Zombie #23
It's Gwen vs a mad scientist. Maybe some Spot too?

SuperQueeros! for February 1st, 2012

Hello February! What 'queero comics do you have for us this year??

Avengers Academy #25
Reptil's gone all evil and stuff!!! At least that's what I've gathered from the cover of this issue. The solicit says that this issue is a mega-brawl between a student, another student, and a teacher. Fingers crossed that when the dust settles Reptil isn't the most evil guy in the room!

i, Zombie #22
Spot is tied up in his basement!?! And not in a good way??? The cast is split up and machinating as the post-zombie-invasion story gears up. And you thought hipsters were scary when they only looked dead!

Stormwatch #6
Throw down in the Carrier! Looks like the Authority are finally going to find out where exactly their inter-dimensional ship comes from. And since this is going to have consequences in Grifter and Voodoo, I'm betting that those odd controls were designed for Daemonites.

X-Factor#231
Can Madrox get home??? Watch Captain America punch Tony Stark and find out!!!!

SuperQueeros! for January 4th, 2012

Happy New Year! I've spent the majority of 2012 in a drug-induced slumber thanks to some atrociously-timed food poisoning. But I've woken up long enough to give you the (brief) 411 on the comics you want to buy tomorrow!

Life with Archie #16
It's Kevin's wedding! Who's the lucky guy?????

Stormwatch #5
It's Midnighter vs. the Prince of Lies!! And Adam One on trial! What's Apollo doing?

i, Zombie #21
No mention of Spot or Gavin in the solicit... But the promise of a cameo is enough to get me to buy this title!

Avengers Academy #21
Reptil is being evil!!!! Everyone fights Hulk-monsters!
